Possibly frustrated with Chandler Jones’ off the field hobbies, the New England Patriots decided to wash their hands with the Pro Bowl defensive end.

New England dealt Jones to Arizona for former Top-1o draft pick, guard Jonathan Cooper as well as the Cardinals second-round pick in April’s NFL Draft.

Jones can certainly rush the passer as he registered 12.5 sacks in 2015 in 15 games, with one more in the postseason.  In 52 career starts, he has 36 sacks.

The toughest position to fill in the NFL is pass rusher, and the Cardinals just acquired one in his prime who should be playing with a chip on his shoulder.

Arizona’s pass rush was virtually non-existent in their NFC Championship Game loss to the Carolina Panthers and their top priority this offseason was to improve it.

With one year remaining on his rookie deal, New England figured him not to be a part of their future plans and getting a former first-round pick and a second round pick in return would certainly be considered maximizing value.

Who’s better off going forward? 

In the very short term, the Cardinals are getting the better football player in Jones.  They are certainly in “win-now mode” with an aging Carson Palmer and a very competitive NFC.

In the longer term, Jones will be a free agent at the end of the season and the Cards will have to figure out a new, long-term deal with him or end up franchising the rising star.

For the Patriots, they have a major need on the offensive line and Cooper should help with that, although he’s been a pretty big disappointment since being selected with the seventh-overall pick in the 2013 Draft. If he can stay healthy, he’ll likely be a fixture at guard.

Undoubtedly, the Patriots pass rush is going to suffer from the loss of Jones.  He was the team’s best at getting to the opposing quarterback and without a wealth of talent in the secondary, New England may be involved in more shootouts in 2016.
