Jameis Winston’s NFL Draft Predicament

What are NFL teams saying about the reigning Heisman Trophy winner?

If Jameis Winston never plays another snap of football for Florida State, not only would he go down as one of the school’s best athletes, he would be one of the most accomplished players in NCAA history. He’s a great leader to his teammates, he’s never lost a game as the Seminoles’ starting quarterback and he has the prototypical tools to succeed at the next level.

With all of the jaw-dropping plays Winston makes on the field comes the head-scratching incidents off of it.

As troubling as last year’s rape investigation centered around Winston was, he was ultimately exonerated and it is something that could’ve happened to any college athlete (Duke lacrosse says hi). But combining it with Winston’s inability to control his seafood urges that faithful day at Publix puts him on high alert for legitimate character flaws.

“As talented as he is, I couldn’t imagine spending an early pick on him,” a team executive told Football Insiders.

Winston was suspended for the first half of Saturday’s game against Clemson for standing on a table and shouting an obscene phrase. This is all while the school is allegedly doing a Title IX investigation of Winston for his role in last year’s rape allegation.

“As a result of his comments yesterday, which were offensive and vulgar, Jameis Winston will undergo internal discipline and will be withheld from competition for the first half of the Clemson game,” Florida State’s interim president, Garnett S. Stokes, and Athletic Director Stan Wilcox said in a joint statement.

“I did something,” Winston said, “so I’ve got to accept my consequences.”

These would be the first real on-field consequences Winston has ever had to face despite several incidents involving him.

Again, each of the incidents independent of themselves might not be a huge cause for concern. When these incidents are combined, a pattern appears to be forming and there’s no reason for an objective person to be 100 percent confident that something like this won’t come up again in the very near future. An NFL team has to ask the question, if Jameis acts like this in a pretty controlled environment like a college campus, what’s going to happen when he gets millions of dollars and is on his own?

“Talking with guys in the league there’s a lot of frustration with Jameis Winston,” draft analyst Todd McShay said. “There was prior to this incident and, talking with two different members of personnel departments today, there’s even more frustration and it’s understood because at that position you have to bring in a guy who has exceptional intangibles and mental makeup.”

The quarterback is more than just the most important position on the field. He’s the CEO of each franchise and with the current climate of the National Football League, off-field incidents have never been more scrutinized. Not only do you need an outstanding athlete who can brilliantly read defenses and adjust on the fly, but you also need a model citizen.

Does Jameis Winston embody all of those attributes?

Former NFL quarterback Shaun King weighed in: “Have you seen the climate around the National Football League? Teams are going to be as risk averse as they’ve ever been and because of that, Winston, as good as he is, as physically talented as he is, he comes with some risk and that will lead to him not being the No. 1 pick in next year’s draft if he chooses to declare.”

Winston will face somewhat of a predicament at the end of the season. He will be draft eligible but he would be entering the NFL Draft, one of the most scrutinizing processes an athlete can embark upon, with many red flags at a time when teams are more cautious than ever. He can also opt to stay in school, but for all the success he’s had at FSU, Tallahassee seems like a place where Winston can’t seem to stay out of trouble.

Decision making hasn’t been Winston’s strong suit, and he’s going to have to make the most important one of his life in just a few months.
