Chip Makes A Trade To Safe Guard Philly Secondary

Eagles move up to get the backend defender they covet in Utah’s Eric Rowe

The Eagles made a trade! The Eagles made a trade! Welcome back trader Chip!

Philadelphia moved up five spots in the second round to No. 47 overall, where they selected Utah defensive back Eric Rowe.

These NFC East teams are making analysis very easy on me by addressing their needs with highly valued players. Philadelphia continues the trend by picking Eric Rowe, who is listed as a corner, but is ticketed to fill their glaring hole at the safety position. Like with the Redskins, I had the Eagles addressing these two needs in reverse order with a safety (Landon Collins) in round one and a wide receiver (Phillip Dorsett) in round two. But I can’t knock them for getting their guy at receiver, Nelson Agholor first then circling back for Rowe.

To make the move, the Eagles sacrificed both their fifth round picks, (No.’s 145 and 156 overall) but they did managed to get back a sixth rounder (No. 191 overall) to balance the move a bit. And it was a necessity that they move up to make this pick, because the talent at the backend on defense, particularly at safety, falls off a cliff behind Rowe.

Rowe played free safety for his first three years in college before moving to corner, so he’s a player with versatility and outstanding skills in coverage. It’s there where Rowe uses his superior length to give receivers fits. Rowe is the type of backend talent that the Eagles have long lacked and having he and free agent acquisition Byron Maxwell in the secondary gives them a better chance to slow down the talented receivers of divisional rivals Dallas and New York.
