Why Percy Harvin Was Traded To The Jets

Find out why the Seattle Seahawks dealt Percy Harvin to the New York Jets.

Fresh off their 28-26 loss to the New England Patriots, the New York Jets have acquired wide receiver Percy Harvin from the Seattle Seahawks for an undisclosed draft pick, according to Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer.

The sixth-year pro from Florida has battled injuries for much of his career, but when he plays he’s one of the most dynamic players in football. Through five games this season Harvin has caught 22 passes for 136 yards without a receiving touchdown. Harvin has been utilized in the running game as he has 11 carries for 92 yards, 51 of which came on a touchdown scamper in the Seahawks’ Week 2 loss to the San Diego Chargers.

The move is rather surprising from both sides, as the Jets fell to 1-6 after their loss to New England Thursday and aren’t realistically competing for the postseason. From Seattle’s perspective, the team has struggled offensively in their 3-2 start and Harvin is by far their most explosive player.

Harvin has been battling a thigh injury and in Sunday’s loss to Dallas, he caught three passes for 0 yards and ran three times for a loss of one yard. It appears that Seattle was forcing Harvin the ball to the detriment of the offense as a whole. Harvin played in just one regular season game last year and wasn’t a huge factor in the Seahawks’ postseason run to their first Super Bowl title.

The Jets have plenty of salary cap space and a good piece of it will be headed in Percy Harvin’s wallet as he is due $41.5 million over the next four seasons (2015-2018).

When everyone on the Jets offense is healthy, Percy Harvin transforms a below average offense to something pretty dynamic. With Eric Decker, Jeremy Kerley and Harvin on the outside, Jeff Cumberland at tight end and the duo of Chris Ivory and Chris Johnson in the backfield, the Jets will have a very good idea of whether second-year quarterback Geno Smith is the man to lead the franchise going forward.

At this point, Football Insiders is unaware of the trade compensation but as soon as we find out we’ll update the story.
