San Francisco 49ers Fans Bitter Over Jacquiski Tartt Pick

The 49ers made one of the more confusing selections of the second round in selecting Samford safety Jaquiski Tartt.

It’s hard to blame 49ers fans if they are having a tough time getting fired up for the 2015 season. After an offseason that saw their team torn down by front-office drama, free-agent departures and sudden retirements, their team is hardly off to a stellar start in the draft.

After spending a first-round pick on DE Arik Armstead, a tantalizing prospect whose production hardly matched his potential, the team reached again in the second round in selecting Samford safety Jaquiski Tartt. Not only is Tartt a reach at No. 46, but it’s unclear why GM Trent Baalke targeted a safety in the first place.

San Francisco appears well stocked at safety after spending a first-round pick on Jimmy Ward last year and another first-rounder on Eric Reid the year before. The team also has Pro Bowler Antone Bethea who, despite being 31 years old, is still playing at a high level.

Perhaps this pick means the 49ers will move the versatile Ward to cornerback. Or maybe the team is content to groom Tartt — who delivers big hits and smooth coverage — to take over for Bethea in the near future. It might have been made with an eye on special teams, as well, where Tarrt should make an immediate impact.

Regardless, San Francisco needed to do more with such a lofty pick, especially given everything else that has taken place in the Bay Area this offseason.
