Redskins Get An EDGE With Second Rounder Preston Smith

Redskins continue to address needs in responsible fashion by adding Preston Smith.

With the sixth pick in the second round of the 2015 draft, the Washington Redskins took Preston Smith, defensive end out of Mississippi State.

This is an outstanding value play for a Washington team that had two glaring needs coming into the draft: offensive line and replacing Orakpo on the EDGE. They addressed both needs with their first two picks. In our Football Insiders mock draft, I had them adding a first rounder on the edge and a second rounder to bolster their offensive line.

They filled those needs in the reverse order from what I had, and I have no qualms with that, especially when you consider that in doing so they got the best player in the draft at a position, something all teams seek at the outset of the draft. Clearly the Redskins saw a larger gulf between Brandon Scherff and the offensive lineman that they’d be picking from in round two than there was from Vic Beasley to a guy like Smith. That makes a lot of sense too.

While Smith will replace Orakpo on the edge in theory, he’s not the same type of player. While Orakpo came into the league as a highly touted pass rusher, Smith is at his strongest in pursuit, particularly against the run. He takes great angles to get to the ball carrier and uses his long arms to wrap up. Great selection by the Redskins, who really appear to be building the right way all of a sudden.
