Patriots QB Brady restructures contract

Quarterback Tom Brady and the New England Patriots agreed Monday to a restructured contract that will give the team millions of dollars in additional cash flow, multiple media outlets reported.

Under the new deal, the Patriots can release Brady for any reason, and the money due him will be guaranteed only if he is injured. Previously, he had fully guaranteed salaries for 2015-17.

In exchange, Brady receives a $1 million annual raise. He will make $8 million in 2015, $9 million in 2016 and $10 million in 2017, according to numerous media reports.

The move does little to affect New England’s salary cap. Brady’s salary-cap figure rises $1 million per year for each of the next three years. However, the Patriots will have extra money to spend this summer.

Numerous media outlets put the additional available money at $24 million. However, the Boston Globe reported that when Brady’s $8 million salary is factored in, the team really comes out with an extra $16 million to use on other players.

Brady’s salary is extremely low for an elite quarterback, so the veteran isn’t taking much of a chance that the Patriots will release him to avoid paying the amount he is owed. If he hit the free agent market, Brady likely would command a salary of $20 million or more, numerous analysts reported.

Brady, 37, is a three-time Super Bowl champion and two-time Super Bowl Most Valuable Player. He was selected to his 10th Pro Bowl this season, and he is a two-time league MVP.
