NFL AM: Free Agent Running Back DeMarco Murray Meeting With the Eagles

The biggest free agent left on the market has been taking his sweet time, but it looks as if running back DeMarco Murray may be whittling down his list with a visit to the Philadelphia Eagles first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The list for Murray appears to be the Eagles, Oakland Raiders and his former team the Dallas Cowboys. This leaves a few other potential suitors out in the cold, especially the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers who had confirmed interest and reside in a place where Murray wouldn’t have to worry about state income taxes.

This decision may not be solely about money.

Murray wants to get paid, but he specifically wants to get paid for what he was able to do last season. The Cowboys, so far, have balked on that front, resisting his terms for a massive payday north of $8 million and offering him closer to $5 million. They ran him into the ground and don’t appear interested in paying him a premium after he may already be used up.

There’s wisdom in this for the Cowboys, as Murray is 27 and coming off of a season where he lead the NFL in carries. History says guys at that age with that kind of workload don’t keep things up for very long.

Understand if Murray doesn’t agree with that sentiment.

At this point, heading to the Eagles seems to either be a ploy to get the Cowboys to pony up more dough, or it may be even more personal. With the Eagles, Murray would get to face his former team twice a year just to make his point.

C.J. Spiller Meeting With Saints

The New Orleans Saints let Darren Sproles go a year ago and didn’t have quite the same explosiveness out of the backfield even with Mark Ingram’s fine year as a rusher. They could be rectifying that problem with one of the quicker backs left on the market in former Buffalo Bills rusher C.J. Spiller. He’ll be visiting New Orleans today, as reported, again, by Schefter.

Once assumed to be back with the Bills if he wanted to be, Spiller quickly became a man without a home once his old team broke the bank to acquire LeSean McCoy from the Philadelphia Eagles, spending not only a young linebacker in the deal, but also paying McCoy far more money than they ever would’ve given their home grown star.

In fact, they weren’t even offering him half of what McCoy is getting.

Spiller is 27 and coming off of an injury, so it is unlikely that his payday will be too great. He’s got a lot of speed left in those wheels, though, and could have a year or two of great production as a passing weapon and as the thunder to Ingram’s lighting, as the Saints are clearly doubling down on the rushing game in the post-Jimmy Graham era.

This move would be a positive shift for the Saints, as Spiller’s speed fits their play style and should be amplified on the Superdome turf. The Saints are clearly trying something new to prolong their championship potential at the end of quarterback Drew Brees career, and pairing a couple of solid rushers with newly acquired center Max Unger should help Brees and Co. keep drives going better than in 2014.

Antrel Rolle Signs With Bears

The Chicago Bears need a lot of help on the defensive side of the ball this offseason, and they’ll be getting one of the better defensive backs on the market. In a signing first confirmed by his agent Drew Rosenhaus, former New York Giants Safety Antrel Rolle is headed to Chicago to be a part of what new head coach John Fox is building.

The deal contains $5 million guaranteed.

The 32-year-old safety clearly has left his best days behind him, but will be more than just a valuable mentor for the young Bears’ roster. He collected three interceptions last year and was one of the few Giants defenders who was able to stick on the field.

He joins a Bears defense that was in disarray following years under Marc Trestman. Fox and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio are going to work hard to turn that unit back into something Bears fans can be proud of, and Rolle has a short window to be a very big part of that.

Titans Getting Closer Look at Marcus Mariota

The Tennessee Titans are headed west.

As The Tennessean’s Jim Wyatt has reported, the Titans will be doing more than just the bare minimum or even due diligence when it comes to the possibility of spending their second-overall pick on former Oregon Ducks quarterback Marcus Mariota.

It has been assumed that Florida State’s Jameis Winston is going first overall to the quarterback-needy Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and most mock drafters have slotted in USC defensive tackle Leonard Williams to the Titans after that.

However, with second-year passer Zach Mettenberger certainly less than a sure thing, the Titans would be wise to make absolutely sure Mariota isn’t their guy.

The Oregon quarterback will even prolong his pro day workout in the form of a private workout for the Titans, because the match would be good for him as well. The 2014 Heisman Trophy winner would be expected to drop at least to the New York Jets at No. 6 if not further if the Titans were to pass on him.

Though Mariota has all the tools to be an elite NFL quarterback, there are concerns about the style of offense he played in college and whether or not those tools will fully translate to the next level. The Titans will do their best to figure that out for themselves this week.
