In our Sunday morning College Football Blog, we’re going to look at the big stories of the day and also give our Top 5 based on actual on-field performance.

No Dominant Teams

On Saturday, we saw the AP’s No. 1 team (Ohio State) nearly lose at home to Northern Illinois, the No. 2 team (Alabama) lose at home to Ole Miss and the No. 6 USC Trojans go down to a Stanford team that lost to Northwestern.

What does this tell us?

Two things; the first is that rankings this early mean very little in actually figuring out who the best teams in the country are, and more importantly any good team can beat any good team on a given week.

There are no more elite teams in college football and there really hasn’t been since the USC dynasty of the mid-2000’s.

A few notes on what we saw:

• Ohio State is probably the most talented team in the nation and they will have plenty of time to get their ducks in a row, especially with their soft schedule.  When they are undefeated and getting prepared for their game against Michigan State, the struggles against Northern Illinois won’t mean anything.
• As much as their fans will deny it, Alabama’s college football dynasty is over (It ended on this play).  It’s great to have the best defensive line in college football, which ‘Bama head coach Nick Saban routinely has.  Unfortunately, the spread and quick pace and quick throws nullify the advantage that they’ve enjoyed for years.  Until they get a legitimately great quarterback, expect Alabama to be good, but no dynasty.
• Ole Miss is for real and they could win the National Championship.  They have great talent up front on defense and a star at wide receiver in LaQuon Treadwell.  If quarterback Chad Kelly gets more comfortable and more accurate, they can win any game, anywhere.
• USC may no longer have sanctions, but they’re still suffering from them. They still have a lack of depth and although their skill position group is as good as any in the nation, the loss of Leonard Williams to the NFL Draft was a killer for the Trojans.
• Bret Bielema is running out of excuses.  Bielema bolted a really good program to test his wears in the SEC, and he’s done nothing but fail almost every step of the way.  Arkansas is in much worse position than it was with Bobby Petrino and losses to FCS teams will get Bielema a one-way ticket out of town sooner rather than later.

Since Rankings Don’t Mean Much….

We’re going to give out own, but only the Top 10 (because anyone from No. 11 to No. 30 is pretty much interchangeable).

1. Ole Miss Rebels- They have the best win of any team this year and they’ve been nothing but dominant.
2. Michigan State Spartans- They beat Oregon at home and that’s not easy.
3. Baylor Bears– They’re taking care of business against the bad teams.
4. Ohio State Buckeyes- They haven’t looked great, but there’s no denying all their talent.
5. TCU Horned Frogs- Talented offense with a great college quarterback in Trevone Boykin.
6. Texas A & M Aggies- Putting together a solid resume.  We’ll see how far Kyle Allen takes them.
7. LSU Tigers- Defensive line is better than in recent years and they have another great RB.
8. Georgia Bulldogs- They look the part of a real contender.
9. Oregon Ducks- Still a fantastic team and a three-point loss at Michigan State is nothing to feel bad about.
10. Notre Dame Fighting Irish- They deserve a better ranking, but those injuries have to start playing a part soon.

Way Too Early Heisman Leaders

As we know the race for the Heisman Trophy can be more volatile than even the rankings are.  Our way too early Heisman Leaders show these talented young men.

1. Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU- Fournette is an NFL running back playing in college.  He’s a man-child who will terrorize defenses for years to come and he plays in an offense where he’s going to get his touches.
2. Trevone Boykin, QB, TCU- Boykin will put up huge stats and if TCU keeps winning games he will be among the Heisman finalists.
3. Nick Chubb, RB, Georgia- Chubb makes the Georgia offense go and he’s as talented as any running back in the nation.
4. Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma- Mayfield is putting up huge numbers while his team is winning big games.  He’s a great dancer too. 
5. Jaylon Smith, LB, Notre Dame- Smith probably can’t win the award, but he should be noticed for being the best defensive player in college football this season (so far).
