Since the first round of the draft moved to prime time a few years back — splitting off from the second round — pick No. 33, the top pick on Day 2, has been a hot commodity.

The current structure of the draft allows teams to analyze the remaining talent after the first round is over and fall in love with guys they had high on their board all over again. Usually there is at least one team that jumps up to a spot earlier in the second round to take advantage of a falling prospect.

We opened the second day of draft that way again this season, with the Tennessee Titans electing to trade down from 33rd overall to grab more picks, a smart move for a franchise in full-on rebuild. It’s the team they swapped with that’s a surprise. Being aggressive in the Draft isn’t something we’re used to from New York Giants GM Jerry Reese, but I love the move in this case. The Giants moved up just seven spots, from 40th overall, and to do so they sacrificed their fourth rounder (No. 108 overall) and their seventh rounder (No. 245 overall). The price seems about right, and maybe even a bit of a bargain. Last season the Dallas Cowboys had to part with their third rounder (No. 78 overall) to leap from 47th to 33rd and take Demarcus Lawrence.

This move is worth a bit of a sacrifice later in the draft for New York. The Giants entered the offseason in need of a back end upgrade on defense and instead they got weaker as they watched Antrel Rolle sign with the Bears, then whiffed on their top free agent target when Devin McCourty re-signed with the Patriots. I had them taking Damarious Randall in the second round of our Football Insiders mock, but Randall was scooped up by the Packers last night. The Giants solved part of the problem anyway and got the better safety in my opinion by moving up to draft Alabama strong safety Landon Collins at No. 33.

Collins is an aggressive strong safety in the Kam Chancellor mold and though he doesn’t quite have the size of Chancellor, his smaller frame packs similar pop. Collins will slide right into the Giants secondary and his sideline-to-sideline pursuit as a tackler will be helpful for the Giants in combating the elite offenses from their division in Dallas and Philadelphia. New York will still have to figure out a way to address the free safety spot to complement Collins, but Rome wasn’t built in a day either.

This pick also makes the Ereck Flowers selection last night more palatable to me. If they’d taken Collins in Round 1 and Flowers in Round 2, they’d be getting lauded and they should be anyway as they’ve come away with a great haul in the first two rounds.
