The Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans executed a rare player-for-player trade on Tuesday as the Titans shipped former second-round pick Dorial Green-Beckham to Philadelphia in exchange for offensive lineman Dennis Kelly.

Green-Beckham has rare physical abilities, as he stands 6-foot-5, 237 pounds, and runs in the 4.4’s.  As a rookie, he caught 32 passes for 549 yards with four touchdowns.  His 17.2 yards per reception ranked sixth in the NFL (tops among rookies) and was the fourth-highest total in Titans history.

With all of that promise, it’s interesting that Titans head coach Mike Mularkey gave up so quickly on the 23 year old.

“Not to speak on Philly’s behalf but they inquired about it,’’ Titans general manager John Robinson said when asked about Green-Beckham’s work ethic. “They thought it was a good opportunity for him, and we thought adding Dennis would be good for our football team. We are moving on. I appreciate everything Dorial did when he was here. He bought in to what we are trying to do. But in the end we felt like this was the best decision for the team.”

Beckham was on track for a strong camp, according to the team’s website.

“I had a good offseason,’’ Green-Beckham said. “I had a hamstring problem that set me back early, but other than that I have been taking care of myself, learning the playbook, and have done my best to play fast.

“My confidence is up there. But I know these next 5-6 weeks I am going to have to keep busting my tail and get in the playbook and stay motivated.”

The Titans loss might just be the Eagles gain as Philadelphia has a nice, young core of receivers with DGB as well as Nelson Agholor, Jordan Matthews and Rueben Randle.  It’s easy to picture this offense growing together with young quarterback Carson Wentz, just as the Jacksonville Jaguars offense has with Blake Bortles, Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns.

As for the Titans, they haven’t had much luck of late with their wide receiver draft selections.  They have picked a wide receiver in the first or second round three times since 2012 (Green-Beckham, Justin Hunter and Kendall Wright) and they haven’t received much of a return.  Wright has shown flashes, but hasn’t been able to stay healthy long enough to be truly productive.  DGB is gone and Hunter has dealt with inconsistency issues.

As for the player Tennessee is getting in Dennis Kelly, he should add depth to a pretty thin offensive line.

“I like his versatility,’’Robinson said of Kelly. “He has really good size, he’s versatile, he’s played a lot of positions. He embodies the traits we look for in an offensive lineman – smart, tough, and dependable.”

Kelly should come in and compete right away for a starting job at either left guard with Quinton Spain, or right tackle with rookie Jack Conklin.
