Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak has one of the biggest quarterback quandaries in the entire league, and he’s taken a step closer to deciding it, sort of.  Kubiak named 2015 seventh round pick Trevor Siemian the starter for this week’s preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Of course, Week 3 of the preseason is the exhibition game which most closely resembles a regular season contest and it would appear to the outside world that the quarterback competition in Denver is no longer between Siemian and veteran Mark Sanchez, but between Siemian and rookie first round pick Paxton Lynch.

Siemian also started last weekend’s preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers, and went 10 for 14, for 75 yards with no touchdowns and an interception.

“I’m going to play the guy that I think is best for our team,” Kubiak said. “We have three guys out there battling. Obviously [Lynch] is a young kid. He did some really good stuff tonight. He made some mistakes, too. I think I’ve continued to tell you guys that he is behind the others from a knowledge standpoint as far as running the group. Obviously we need to keep coming, keep bringing him along. We’re going to keep working here, find the guy that we think is best for our football team and go from there.”

The Broncos head coach did say that all three quarterbacks would play in the Rams game, but it appears as if Sanchez has fallen out of favor after his two fumble performance Saturday night.

“At the end of the day, it’s your job to protect the ball,” Kubiak said after the 49ers loss.“That’s the most important thing. That’s something that coming out of tonight wasn’t good enough.”

Kubiak foreshadowed that there would be some sort of change.

“I foresee myself trying to find a way to fix some mistakes,” Kubiak said. “I’m going to take it a day at a time. That’s where I’m going right now.”

At this point, Sanchez is likely auditioning for some other team and the options may be limited.  The most logical landing spots for the former first round pick would appear to be in Detroit, Minnesota, San Diego and Buffalo.

The real question revolving around Siemian will be how long he can actually hold onto the starting job.  Draft status alone would lead one to believe that it’s a very temporary gig with a first-round pick waiting in the wings.  Even the great Kurt Warner couldn’t hold off a first-round pick in Eli Manning back in 2004 with the New York Giants, and it doesn’t lead one to have much faith that Siemian-without much pedigree- can hold off Lynch, who is already making plays with and against the No. 3’s.

Ultimately, Siemian is in a much better spot than he was a year ago, sitting behind Peyton Manning and former second-round pick Brock Osweiler.  When Lynch was drafted after Sanchez was traded for, the former Northwestern quarterback was seen as a long shot to even make the roster.  Fast forward a few months and he’s the temporary starter.

Things could certainly be a lot worse.
