Arizona Cardinals Get Their Golden Boy

The Cardinals, who rely heavily on blitzes to create a pass rush, finally found a natural edge rusher in Markus Golden.

Over the last two seasons, when Todd Bowles was orchestrating the defense in the desert, the Cardinals created a pass rush by blitzing early and often. While that strategy was mostly effective, head coach Bruce Arians knows his defense can get to a higher level if it can create the same kind of pressure without sending so many bodies.

To aid in that effort, the Cardinals spent the No. 58 overall pick on Missouri pass rusher Markus Golden. The speedy Golden posted double-digit sacks last season, showing a quick first step off the edge and relentlessness in pursuit.

Golden is not a one-trick pony, either. He can hold his own against the run, setting the edge and chasing plays down from the backside.

Golden fills the void created by the loss of John Abraham, who abruptly retired early last season after dealing with a series of concussions. Along with Arizona’s first-round pick, OT D.J. Humphries, Golden will help make one of the league’s toughest teams even more physical in 2015.
