Akron Zips’ Jawon Chisholm Makes the Most of His Pro Day

Jawon Chisolm’s combination of size and speed makes him an underrated prospect.

The Akron Pro Day wrapped up on March 10th in front of nearly two-dozen NFL Scouts in attendance. One player in particular that has been on the NFL’s radar is running back Jawon Chisholm. He passes the eyeball test (6-foot, 206 pounds) with the ability to both run and catch the football effectively.

Chisholm helped solidify himself and improved his NFL stock after running an impressive 4.48 40-yard dash at his Pro Day.  37 running backs were invited to the NFL Scouting Combine and only four ran a faster forty time than Chisholm did at his Pro Day.

“I honestly had to wait until I heard it from a lot of people,” said Chisholm about his forty-time. “Then once my coach (Terry Bowden) told me after talking with scouts, I knew it was pretty much true.”

A natural runner with instincts and vision, his entire body of work remained an enigma without the validation of running the time he did at his size. The fifth year senior finished with 3,403 rushing yards and 26 rushing touchdowns with 4.9 yards per carry during his career. Chisholm was an asset in the passing game catching the football grabbing 85 passes for 682 yards and three touchdowns as a Zip.

“I believe it helped me a lot,” said Chisholm reflecting back on his performance. “I don’t have the last say so.”

He is obviously right.  The final verdict is in the hands of 32 NFL teams, but he has another chance to continue to climb up their draft boards. He is headed to Arizona for the Super Regional Combine (March 21-22) in Phoenix. It is another opportunity to establish himself as one of the more versatile running backs (with size) available in the up-coming NFL Draft.
