AFC West Draft Grades

See how the AFC West fared in the NFL Draft.

With the NFL Draft in the history books, it’s time for teams to start officially preparing for the 2015 campaign. In 2014, the lone AFC West team to reach the postseason was the Denver Broncos.

Denver won the division for the fourth straight year, while future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning has been under center for the last three division crowns. However, for the first time in recent memory, Manning showed significant signs of slowing down.

At the age of 39, there’s no secret Manning’s best days are behind him. The decline of Manning gives Kansas City, San Diego and even Oakland an opportunity to close the gap.

Without further ado, let’s examine how each team in the AFC West fared during the draft this past weekend.

Team: Denver Broncos

Picks: Shane Ray (OLB), Ty Sambrailo (OT), Jeff Heuerman (TE), Max Gracia (C), Lorenzo Doss (CB), Darius Kilgo (DT), Trevor Siemian (QB), Taurean Nixon (CB) and Josh Furman (S).

Pick value grade: Day 1 (A), Day 2 (B), Day 3 (C)

Address needs: B+

Best value pick: Shane Ray

Worst value pick: Ty Sambrailo. They should have taken talented offensive tackle T.J. Clemmings.

Overall thoughts: When it comes to the ‘steal of the draft’, it’ll be hard to argue against Shane Ray. The reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Year saw his stock take a dramatic dip after being arrested on marijuana possession just days before the draft. In addition to Ray, Denver added much needed depth up front and in the secondary.

What will we say about this class in 3 years: We’ll say that Shane Ray is a perennial pro-bowler and Jeff Heuerman is a lot better than people originally thought. As far as the rest of the class goes, I don’t expect for us to say much.

Overall grade: B- I give this class a solid B because Denver addressed their needs and got a major steal in Shane Ray. The addition of Ray elevates this class an entire letter grade. If not for his off the field issues, Ray may have been a top 5 pick. There’s no denying his ability to rush the passer, while having sideline-to-sideline range.

Team: Kansas City Chiefs

Picks: Marcus Peters (CB), Mitch Morse (OL), Chris Conley (WR), Steven Nelson (CB), Ramik Wilson (ILB), DJ Alexander (ILB), James O’Shaughnessy (TE), Rakeem Nunez-Roches (DT) and Da’Ron Brown (WR).

Pick value grade: Day 1 (A), Day 2 (B-), Day 3 (C+)

Address needs: B

Best value pick: Marcus Peters

Worst value pick: Mitch Morse. They should have taken wide receiver Jaelen Strong.

Overall thoughts: The Chiefs got a lot of good value in this draft. They received a steal with Marcus Peters, only if he’s able to get his act together, and Chris Conley could emerge as a legit deep threat. Conley’s numbers won’t ‘wow’ you, but keep in mind he’s coming from a run heavy offense in Georgia. Conley has good size at 6-f00t-2 coupled with elite speed. Also, watch out for tight end James O’Shaugnessy.

What will we say about this class in 3 years: We’ll say that Marcus Peters has emerged as one of the top cornerbacks in the league and that Chris Conley has turned out to be a reliable second receiver.

Overall grade: B+- This class gets a B+ and a major reason for that is Marcus Peters. Just like Shane Ray, Peters is a top tier pick if not for his off the field issues. Although the Chiefs dropped the ball with Mitch Morse, they made up for it by getting very good value with the likes of Chris Conley, Ramik Wilson, DJ Alexander and James O’Shaughnessy.

Team: San Diego Chargers

Picks: Melvin Gordon (RB), Denzel Perryman (ILB), Craig Mager (CB), Kyle Emanuel (OLB) and Darius Philon (DT).

Pick value grade: Day 1 (B), Day 2 (B-), Day 3 (A)

Address needs: B

Best value pick: Denzel Perryman

Worst value pick: Craig Mager. The better option at corner here would’ve been a more proven Steven Nelson.

Overall thoughts: For a team that only had five picks, I think the Chargers did themselves a very good service. Melvin Gordon may have been a reach at 15, but it addressed a dire need. The hope is that he takes pressure off Philip Rivers. In addition to Gordon, picking up Denzel Perryman was a steal in the second round.

What will we say about this class in 3 years: In three years, we’ll say the selections of Melvin Gordon and Denzel Perryman is arguably the most productive combo of any from this draft.

Overall grade: Considering the limited picks, this class gets a B+. Melvin Gordon has a chance to be a special back in this league for a very long time and Denzel Perryman is an absolute beast in the middle of the defense. He makes plays sideline to sideline and he’ll lay the wood on you. Also, San Diego picked up small school guys in Craig Mager and Kyle Emanuel, who both dominated in the collegiate ranks.

Team: Oakland Raiders

Picks: Amari Cooper (WR), Mario Edwards Jr. (DT), Clive Walford (TE), Joe Feliciano (OG), Ben Heeney (ILB), Neiron Ball (OLB), Max Valles (OLB), Anthony Morris (OL), Andre Debose (WR) and Dexter McDonald (CB).

Pick value grade: Day 1 (A), Day 2 (B+), Day 3 (B)

Address needs: B-

Best value pick: Clive Walford

Worst value pick: Mario Edwards Jr.- Oakland took the riskier Seminole defensive linemen here. Eddie Goldman would have been the safer pick.

Overall thoughts: Derek Carr had a solid rookie campaign, but moving forward he needs more weapons at his disposal. Well, now he has them. Amari Cooper has all the tools to be a number one receiver at the next level and athletic tight end Clive Walford should be able to step right in and contribute.

What will we say about this class in 3 years: We’ll admit that Amari Cooper is a top 10 receiver and that one of their linebackers taken in the later rounds will be an impact player, most likely it’ll be Ben Heeney.

Overall grade: This class gets a B+. Besides the obvious, Oakland received some very good value late in this draft. Former Kansas Jayhawk Ben Heeney was heavily slept on. Heeney was a first-team All-Big 12 selection in 2014, but he fell all the way to the 5th round.
