5 Pro Days to Watch: UCF’s Perriman makes first round case

It would be difficult to match the star power of last year’s wide receiver draft class, but the 2015 NFL Draft comes close. West Virginia’s Kevin White, Alabama’s Amari Cooper and Louisville’s DeVante Parker are the cream of the crop, but the second tier at the position boasts several possible first round picks, including Central Florida wide receiver Breshad Perriman.

The son of 10-year NFL receiver Brett Perriman, the UCF product wasn’t able to participate in any drills at the NFL Scouting Combine last month due to a hamstring strain, but is expected to be a full participant at his pro day. And with a positive workout, Perriman could lock up a spot in the draft’s first round.

Here are five storylines to watch this week on the pro day schedule.

5. Utah receiver Dres Anderson expects to run a “high 4.3” (March 26):

Considered a top 100 prospect entering last season, Anderson tore the meniscus in his left knee in October and needed surgery, which ended his college career. He was still rehabbing the injury after the season and missed the Senior Bowl and NFL Scouting Combine, but said he is “good to go” for Utah’s on-campus pro day.

Anderson, who is the son of 10-year NFL receiver Flipper Anderson, has set the bar high for himself. Not only does he hope to break his father’s NFL record for receiving yards in a single game (336), but when I asked him what he expected to run in the 40-yard dash, he was confident with his answer: “4.3, high 4.3. I feel like I can do it.” And if he’s able to meet his goal, Anderson might be able to creep back into that top 100 picture.

4. In a weak safety class, Fresno State’s Derron Smith hopes to stand out (March 25):

Arguably one of the top five safety prospects in the 2015 class, Smith is a tremendous competitor, but postseason hernia surgery sidelined him for the combine. He said in Indianapolis that he had March 25 “circled” on his calendar and plans to do a full work out for scouts at Fresno State’s pro day.

Smith was recruited as a cornerback because of his athleticism, but he preferred to play safety because of his physical nature. If he is able to produce cornerback numbers in the 40-yard dash and agility drills, that will significantly help his draft stock, especially in this year’s week class of safeties.

3. TCU prospects seek redemption (March 27):

TCU sent seven prospects to the combine, but the school’s most notable names underperformed at Lucas Oil Stadium and are hoping for improvement at the school’s pro day.

Linebacker Paul Dawson tested among the worst at his position in the 40-yard dash (4.93), vertical jump (28 inches) and 20-yard shuttle (4.49). However, he recently revealed that a tweaked hamstring was the reason behind the slow times and that the pro day will be “much better.” Safety Chris Hackett had the slowest 40-yard dash (4.81) of all the defensive backs in Indianapolis and failed to impress in any of the other agility tests. Along with Dawson, Hackett smartly plans to do a full workout for scouts in Fort Worth for the Horned Frogs’ pro day.

2. Iowa’s Brandon Scherff makes closing argument (March 23):

At the combine, Scherff ran a 5.05 40-yard dash and lifted 225 pounds 23 times on the bench press. But he injured his hamstring during workouts and had to bow out of the event.

A month later, Scherff is ready to get back on the field and perform for NFL scouts. And knowing his approach to competition, it’s a good bet he will do every drill for the teams in attendance at the Hawkeyes’ pro day. While his game film is enough to earn him a top 15 grade, positive testing numbers can’t hurt and might be able to sway a team with a need at offensive tackle that he can stay on the edges. Scherff is the favorite to be the highest drafted offensive lineman on April 30.

1. The Breshad Perriman train is about to pick up steam… (March 25):

After straining his hamstring during combine training, Perriman wasn’t cleared to run in Indianapolis and chose not to lift on the bench press, making his pro day a must-see event for NFL scouts. He is very well-liked in NFL circles with his size/athleticism combination so teams are eager to put testing numbers next to his name to see how it matches up with his film.

Despite losing 2014 first round pick Blake Bortles at quarterback, Perriman had his most productive season as a junior and proved to be a big-play threat at every level of the field as the starting “X” receiver. With a good showing at Central Florida’s pro day, many around the league think its possible Perriman could sneak into the top 20 picks.
