The 2015 NFL draft has come and gone; therefore, it is time to analyze each pick with excruciating detail. As is the case every year, there are picks that are perceived as bad fits and others that are perceived as good fits. With that in mind, let’s take a look a couple of the picks that look to be good fits and some that appear to be bad fits.

Good Fits

Vic Beasley – Atlanta Falcons

There may not be a player who is a better fit for the Atlanta Falcons’ defensive scheme than Vic Beasley. He is a freak athlete who gets after the quarterback better than anyone else in the draft. He seems like an ideal fit for the Falcons’ Leo position, which is basically a weak-side edge rusher, or he could even play as a “Sam” linebacker who normally lines up or tight ends. Beasley will be a dynamic presence that Atlanta has been desperately been missing off the edge for a long time.

D.J. Humphries – Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals needed to solidify their offensive line in this draft and the selection of D.J. Humphries went a long way toward accomplishing that goal. Humphries is a quick-footed offensive tackle who can play right or left tackle. What separates Humphries apart from the other offensive tackles in this class is his footwork as he is extremely sound in that area. Humphries could play left or right tackle for the Cardinals and he will help give Carson Palmer more time to pick apart opposing defenses.

Malcom Brown – New England Patriots

The New England Patriots always appear to get great value throughout the NFL draft and they continued that trend when they selected defensive lineman Malcom Brown. Throughout the pre-draft process, Brown was lauded for his ability to play multiple positions along the defensive line, what better team to utilize that versatility than the multiple defenses of the Patriots. Brown will bring a hulking presence to Patriots defensive line and make them even more formidable against the run and the pass.

Bad Fits

Todd Gurley – St. Louis Rams

Everyone knows that Todd Gurley is an exceptional talent, but coming off a torn ACL, is he really worth a top-10 selection? Furthermore, the St. Louis Rams had already allocated a ton of resource to the running back position in the last few years as they selected Isaiah Pead in the second round of the 2012 draft, Zac Stacy in the fifth round of the 2013 draft and Tre Mason in the third round of the 2014 draft. This pick looks like a luxury selection on a team that isn’t in a position to have luxuries.

Ereck Flowers – New York Giants

The biggest reach of the first round was when the New York Giants selected offensive tackle Ereck Flowers at the No. 9 overall pick. Flowers is a slow-footed mauler in the run game who struggles mightily in pass protection. He lacks the core strength and hand use to thrive on the edge against NFL pass-rushers and Eli Manning will pay for it throughout this year.

Marcus Mariota – Tennessee Titans

From a purely scheme point of view, Marcus Mariota is a poor fit in Tennessee Titans’ head coach Ken Whisenhunt’s offense. Mariota comes from a quick hitting spread offense and Whisenhunt’s dropback deep-oriented passing attack is almost the polar opposite of that. Unless Whisenhunt considerably alters his offensive philosophy, Mariota is going to struggle mightily through the 2015 NFL season.
