As training camp approaches, most teams are feeling pretty good about their situations entering the 2015 season.  Everyone knows about Ndamukong Suh going to the Miami Dolphins via free agency, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafting Jameis Winston first overall.

What about the moves that didn’t receive as much attention?

We’re going to highlight some shrewd, yet underrated moves by NFC general managers which should pay off this season.

Here was our first volume, ICYMI.

Saints Sign C.J. Spiller

Ever since being drafted seventh-overall by the Buffalo Bills, C.J. Spiller has been a disappointment as he has battled numerous injuries.  On top of the injuries, the Bills didn’t do a great job of getting him the ball in space, something that would make him most successful.

After a much needed divorce between Spiller and the Bills, C.J. may have landed in the absolutely perfect spot in the Bayou.  There may not be a coach that’s better at utilizing his talent than Sean Payton, regardless of what Junior Gallette says about him.  Spiller finally has a functional quarterback in front of him and he will benefit from the intelligence and weapons around him and although he may never carry an offense as his draft status once suggested, he will add another Reggie Bush type of dimension which helped the Saints win a Super Bowl six years ago.

Falcons Draft Justin Hardy

Fourth-round draft picks don’t usually garner much acclaim, and rarely are they seen as franchise cornerstones.  Although the idea of a slot receiver becoming a franchise cornerstone is a stretch, the Atlanta Falcons found an absolutely perfect fit for their offense in ECU’s Justin Hardy.

Hardy was unbelievably productive in college, setting school records for receiving yards (4,541) and touchdown receptions (35).  The 5-foot-10 future slot receiver is quicker than fast, and he should make up for the loss of Harry Douglas in free agency.  Hardy will have a chance to beat slot defenders and linebackers as studs like Julio Jones and Roddy White will command most of the attention on the outside.

Redskins Hire Joe Barry

One of the more underrated moves of the underrated, but effective offseason of the Washington Redskins was the hiring of former San Diego Chargers linebackers coach Joe Barry, as defensive coordinator.  Barry will find a way to make Washington’s 3-4 more productive, especially rushing the opposing quarterbacks.

Barry demands more aggression out of his defensive linemen and the ‘Skins improved by signing Terrance Knighton, Stephen Paea and Ricky Jean Francois.  Assuming Jason Hatcher, Ryan Kerrigan and Trent Murphy can stay healthy, Washington should have one of the most improved defenses in the NFL.

Cardinals Sign Jermaine Gresham

After tight end John Carlson retired, the Arizona Cardinals were in a bit of a bind at the position.  Enter Jermaine Gresham, who signed with the team last week.  Gresham won’t reach 1,000 yards receiving or have double-digit touchdown receptions, but he is one of the better two-way tight ends in the NFL.

Gresham will assist an anemic rushing attack as he blocks like a lineman, and he poses another big target over the middle to go along with future Hall of Famer Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd and slot speedster John Brown.  Assuming Carson Palmer stays healthy, the Cardinals offense is loaded and Gresham adds another dimension.

49ers Ink Reggie Bush

Although Reggie Bush’s Heisman (without the trophy) days seem like ages ago, he can still be a productive player in the right system, in the proper role.  Like C.J. Spiller, Bush was miscast early in his career as a guy who could carry an entire offense, where he’s best in a slot-type of role.

The 49ers should experience a major fall-off this season due to all the retirements on defense, but their offense will be better than many expect.  Colin Kaepernick has gone from possibly underrated, to overrated, and now underrated again.  San Francisco returns a healthy Vernon Davis along with free agent speedster Torrey Smith.  Second-year pro Carlos Hyde will handle the between the tackles running duties and Reggie Bush will be a perfect complement as the 49ers will get him the ball in space.

Although changes have been drastic for San Francisco, they will have a better offense than many think.
