The Minnesota Vikings exercised their fifth-year contract options on left tackle Matt Kalil and safety Harrison Smith.

Kalil was the fourth overall pick in 2012, but is coming off a disappointing third season plagued by inconsistent play following offseason knee surgery. Kalil particularly struggled in pass protection, and was credited with giving up double-digit sacks. The Vikings chose to pick up the $11.096 million option on Kalil’s rookie contract for 2016, but can still release him after the season without any further obligation as long as he does not get injured.

Smith was the 29th overall pick in 2012 and pick up some All-Pro votes in his third NFL season. His fifth-year option is worth $5.278 million, and the sides are expected to discuss a potential long-term contract before the start of the season.
