Vick will start for Jets vs. Chiefs

Michael Vick will replace Geno Smith as the starting quarterback when the New York Jets face the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, Jets coach Rex Ryan announced Monday.

“We decided to go with Mike Vick this week and give him an opportunity to work extensively with the first-team offense,” Ryan said, “and have Geno take a step back for the first time in his career, maybe get a different perspective of it.

“This is not the long term, this is just on the immediate. My focus is on Kansas City and trying to get a win. That’s why this decision was made.”

Smith threw three interceptions in the first quarter of the Jets’ 42-34 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday and was pulled for Vick after 12 plays.

“I never expected to start out a game like that,” Smith told reporters after the game. “I’ve got to make sure I get better from that and don’t allow things like that to happen and put ourselves in those type of situations.”

Smith also suffered a shoulder injury and had X-rays after the game, although the injury apparently was not serious as Ryan said Smith will back up Vick vs. the Chiefs.

Vick completed 18 of 36 passes for 153 yards, throwing an interception and losing two fumbles.

“I would love to start,” he said after the game. “I don’t mind that at all.”

Now he gets his chance the week his team faces the club coached by the man who gave him a second chance in Philadelphia, Andy Reid.

Smith has started all 24 games of his career, but he has thrown 31 interceptions. Ten of those picks have come this season as the Jets have started 1-7.

Smith is last in the NFL in completion percentage (56.2) and passer rating (65.6), and his 10 interceptions are second only to Jacksonville rookie Blake Bortles’ 12.
