Titans vs. Giants: A battle of attrition

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Bad in the NFL is one thing.

Bad and beat up is an even worse combination. And so it is for the Tennessee Titans as they stare a six-game losing streak in the face this week and limp into Sunday’s game with a 2-10 record.

The only consolation seems to be that the team that will be across the field from them on Sunday, the New York Giants, is in a strikingly similar situation. The Giants are 3-9 and have dropped seven in a row, prompting much speculation that two-time Super Bowl-winning coach Tom Coughlin might be on his way out the door at the end of the season.

Injuries have been a common problem for both teams.

For the Titans, the injuries have done one thing, allowing them to tinker constantly with the bottom end of the roster and get a chance to evaluate a number of players over the season’s final few weeks.

Last week, injuries claimed receiver Justin Hunter, who suffered a lacerated spleen that landed him in a Houston hospital for three days. He was released from the hospital Wednesday.

Hunter’s injury ends his season with 28 catches for 498 yards and three touchdowns, not a big jump from his rookie year, when he had 18 receptions and four touchdowns.

If there is a plus to the injury, it is that the Titans will finally get to take some sort of look at receiver Kris Durham, a waiver pickup at the start of the season from the Detroit Lions. Durham has been active for only one game this season and never even got onto the field for a snap in that contest. Now, with only four receivers available, he will have to see some sort of action.

“I don’t have any question he’ll be ready to contribute. He knows the offense. He’s done a good job with that. He’s gotten a lot of reps in practice; he just hasn’t played in the games,” coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “The one thing I don’t worry about is that he is a veteran. He’s got a lot of experience, so I would expect that it won’t be too big for him. It shouldn’t be too big of an adjustment.”

Elsewhere, the Titans are potentially facing a second week without their starting tackles as neither Taylor Lewan nor Michael Oher practiced on Wednesday. Lewan has a high ankle sprain, while Oher has a toe injury that ended a 91-game streak of games played last week.

It allowed the Titans to get a look at Byron Stingily and Will Svitek at the tackle spots, and the results were predictably bad.

As for Lewan and Oher, Whisenhunt said, “I really don’t know about their chances. We’ll have to see as it progresses. We signed another tackle. Obviously, it’s something we needed to do because of where we are with the line, and hopefully those guys will continue to get better.”

The Titans signed Terren Jones off the Ravens’ practice squad Tuesday to bolster their depth.

SERIES HISTORY: Tied 5-5. The Giants’ last visit to LP Field was in 2006, when Mathias Kiwanuka inexplicably allowed Vince Young to escape his grasp as the rookie QB fueled the Titans’ comeback win, 24-21.

BY THE NUMBERS: 338 — The Titans have allowed a league-worst 338 points and also rank last in stopping the run.

QUOTE TO NOTE: “Losing sucks. It’s that simple. There’s a lot of things that have got to change in this locker room for us to get a win, but really all we can do is keep grinding, keep staying focused and take it personal really.” – QB Zach Mettenberger on the Titans’ six-game losing skid.

NOTES: CB Jemea Thomas was signed off the St. Louis Rams’ practice squad and CB Brandon Ghee was waived. Ghee had an interception against the Eagles two weeks ago, but he was burned for a TD Sunday in Houston. … LB Kamerion Wimbley was out of practice again Wednesday. He missed Sunday’s game due to a hamstring injury. … OT Taylor Lewan still has not returned to practice due to a high ankle sprain that kept him out last week. … OT Michael Oher missed Sunday’s game with a toe injury and has not yet returned to practice. … QB Zach Mettenberger was limited on Wednesday as he tries to come back from a sprained throwing shoulder sustained in Sunday’s loss at Houston.
