Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien announced Friday that Brian Hoyer will start at quarterback against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 6.

Hoyer won the job out of camp but was pulled in the fourth quarter of a season-opening loss to the Kansas City Chiefs after committing two turnovers.

Ryan Mallett started since then, but he also has struggled and Hoyer took over in both of the last two games as the Texans fell to 1-4.

“I think it’s 11 one-game seasons,” O’Brien said Friday. “(Hoyer’s) the starter for Jacksonville. I think over the last two games, he’s gone in there with a really good attitude, with a calmness about him. Really good mechanics. Has he been perfect? No. … I think overall he’s played pretty well, so we’re going to go with him against Jacksonville.”

Hoyer replaced Mallett in the second quarter on Thursday night and was 24-of-31 passing for 312 yards and two touchdowns in the 27-20 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. But Hoyer was intercepted by defensive back Mike Adams with less than 2 minutes left.

“I think he went in there last night, I think he was 16 of 18 in the second half, you know, did a pretty decent job other than the last pass,” O’Brien said of Hoyer. “Obviously that was one we all wish that we could have back — he wishes he could have back.”

The Texans will try to get back in the win column when they travel to Jacksonville on Oct. 18.

“Is it an ideal situation as it relates to this league? No,” O’Brien said of the quarterback shuffling. “I understand that, but we’re moving on to Jacksonville.”

Mallett made his displeasure clear after being pulled from Thursday’s game.

“I’m frustrated, frustrated in that loss,” Mallett said. “Obviously we want to win.”
