Steelers OTA notebook: Gardner gets shot at QB

PITTSBURGH — Former Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers to play wide receiver, but this week he has been at quarterback.

“We’re just turning over the stones,” coach Mike Tomlin said.

The Steelers have been disappointed with the performance of No. 3 quarterback Landry Jones, a fourth-round pick in 2013 who has yet to suit up for a game in two seasons. Former Clemson great Tajh Boyd is also at quarterback.

–Long snapper Greg Warren is the missing link for this trivia question: Which four Steelers on the roster have two Super Bowl rings? The others are Ben Roethlisberger, Heath Miller and James Harrison.

Warren, who will enter his 11th season as the Steelers’ long snapper, says one of the sports networks mentioned recently that there were only three left with two rings.

–Ryan Shazier, the NFL’s 15th overall draft pick last year, has been displaying why the Steelers chose him. The inside linebacker with 4.36 speed in the 40-yard dash worked out in Arizona this spring with Harrison and other Steelers linebackers, and it’s showing in practices.

He should start along with Lawrence Timmons on the inside in the Steelers’ 3-4 defense. Shazier said he played at 225 pounds as a rookie but now comes in around 232 and has not lost any of his speed or quickness.

Shazier called his rookie season “kind of a disappointment” — a knee injury caused him to miss four games early in the season and a high ankle sprain put him on the shelf for four more. He started the season next to Timmons, which is where he should be when his second season begins.
