SB XLIX scoreless after first quarter

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Super Bowl XLIX was scoreless after the first quarter.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was intercepted in the end zone on the 13th play of the second drive of the game, giving the ball back to the Seattle Seahawks with 1:39 left in the first.

Cornerback Jeremy Lane, who made the interception, left the game with his arm immobilized after his return down the right sideline. Brady completed at least one touchdown pass in each of his previous five Super Bowl, and he was attempting to add to that mark.

With defensive end Michael Bennett closing from his left, Brady backpedaled and whirled a pass into the end zone. With no intended target close, Lane grabbed his first career interception and returned the ball to the 14-yard line.

Lane, who is the Seahawks’ nickel cornerback, was listed as doubtful to return.

The teams exchanged opening-drive punts to start the game. New England converted a first down as Brady connected on three consecutive passes and narrowly missed a second first down on a running-into-the-punter penalty.

The Patriots dominated time of possession, holding the ball for 11:07 of the first 15 minutes. Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson did not attempt a pass in the first quarter.
