The New Orleans Saints signed veteran tight end Alex Smith and waived tight end Jack Tabb on Friday.

Tabb, an undrafted rookie from North Carolina, was carted off the field Thursday with an apparent knee injury. If unclaimed, he could return to the Saints’ injured reserve.

Previous injuries to Josh Hill and Kevin Brock had left the team short of tight ends beyond Ben Watson and Orson Charles.

Smith, 33, spent the last two seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, although he played in just two games last year before a biceps injury landed him on injured reserve.

A third-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2005, he has 163 receptions in 119 games for the Buccaneers (2005-08), Philadelphia Eagles (2009), Cleveland Browns (2010-12) and Bengals.
