Roman, Shanahan among Rams’ OC candidates

The St. Louis Rams have requested permission to interview San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman and former Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, according to ESPN.com.

The Rams are searching to replace former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who left St. Louis on Wednesday to become offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Georgia.

Roman is also a candidate to replace Shanahan in Cleveland, according to reports. Roman remains under contract with the 49ers even after head coach Jim Harbaugh left for Michigan, but the team is permitting him to seek employment elsewhere.

The Browns and Shanahan parted ways Thursday after reports surfaced that friction between the coaching staff and front office became an issue.

Shanahan, among others, has reportedly interviewed for the head-coaching vacancy with the Buffalo Bills. Shanahan is intrigued by the idea of coaching again under his father, Mike Shanahan, with whom he worked for four years on the Washington Redskins staff as offensive coordinator before both were fired after last season.

Even if Mike Shanahan isn’t hired as a head coach, Kyle Shanahan is said to be the preferred choice as offensive coordinator for multiple candidates, including Dan Quinn of the Seattle Seahawks and Vic Fangio of the 49ers.

The Bills, San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders already have interviewed Mike Shanahan and would consider hiring the father-son duo with Mike as head coach and Kyle as offensive coordinator, according to Cleveland.com. Mike Shanahan could also interview with the Chicago Bears, where he would reunite with quarterback Jay Cutler.
