The New York Jets plan to sign veteran punter Steve Weatherford, according to multiple reports.

Current punter Ryan Quigley was placed on the team’s injury list Saturday as questionable for Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots because of a shin injury.

By signing Weatherford, that indicates Quigley is not expected to play.

Weatherford most recently played for the New York Giants. The team cut him at the end of the preseason. He was due to make more than $2 million this season.

The 32-year-old played for the Jets in 2009-10.

In four seasons with the Giants, Weatherford averaged 46.3 yards per punt. That is above his career average of 44.5 yards. He netted 45.0 yards per punt in the preseason.
