Redskins QB McCoy hopeful he can start Sunday

ASHBURN, Va. — Robert Griffin III finished Sunday’s game, but Colt McCoy is hopeful he will be physically able to start Week 15 against the New York Giants.

McCoy left the field with a neck injury with Griffin working in relief for the final two minutes of a 24-0 loss to the Rams at FedEx Field.

“It is what it is, I don’t know how to describe it,” said McCoy, who was hit on the back and upper neck by defensive end Robert Quinn’s arm during a takedown.

There was still enough pain in his neck Monday that McCoy was uncertain if he would practice or play. McCoy underwent an MRI and X-rays Sunday night but the pain a day later was much the same.

McCoy said he’s still awaiting medical opinions on his neck that might prevent him from playing. If he gets clearance from doctors, McCoy said he “would expect” to start this week.

Sacked six times and hit four more by the Rams’ ferocious pass rush, McCoy didn’t exit the game immediately when he felt discomfort in his neck. He played five plays over the next two series before being pulled in what he said was the first shutout of his life.

“I still played a few more snaps, but I just knew something wasn’t right,” McCoy said.
