Rams will again try to win two in a row

EARTH CITY, Mo. — Here we go again. For the fifth time this season, the St. Louis Rams won a football game, this time a 52-0 demolition of the Oakland Raiders. For the fifth time, the Rams will try to follow a victory with another, something they haven’t been able to do after their four previous wins.

Since the Rams fell to 1-4 following an Oct. 13 loss to San Francisco, they have alternated wins and losses over the next seven games.

They will try to halt that frustrating sequence in a visit to Washington to play the Redskins on Sunday.

The Rams nearly had a two-game winning streak last month, but a last-minute rally fell short against the San Diego Chargers on Nov. 23. Quarterback Shaun Hill made an ill-advised throw in the final minute that resulted in an interception on a play that began from the San Diego 4-yard line.

After the win over the Raiders, who won the previous week against the Kansas City Chiefs, St. Louis coach Jeff Fisher saluted his team for putting the San Diego loss behind them.

“Well, I guess that’s what happens when everything’s working well together for you,” Fisher said Sunday. “It was a great effort. Again, I hate to go back to last week, but it was pretty impressive the way they handled that loss and put it behind them and came back and worked and accepted the next challenge, and that’s what this team is about. We got a lot of big plays out of a lot of players today.”

The Rams took control of the game immediately on offense and defense. The Raiders went three-and-out on their first three possessions, while the Rams scored touchdowns on their first three.

Hill came out throwing right away with quick, short passes, on several of which he audibled out of runs.

The highlight of the first possession was a screen pass to running back Tre Mason that went 35 yards for a touchdown. On the next drive, wide receiver Stedman Bailey had three receptions for 58 yards, including a one-handed grab for 34 yards, that led to a 2-yard Hill scoring run.

Bailey added two catches for 42 yards in the next possession, which was capped by an 18-yard run by wide receiver Tavon Austin.

By the time the quarter was over, the Rams led 21-0, having compiled 203 yards on 17 plays, while the Raiders gained just 34 yards on 14 plays. Mason then galloped 89 yards for a touchdown on the Rams’ first play of the second quarter, and the rout was on.

Fisher was asked about getting the team focused after the loss and during a holiday week.

“We did it as a team, together as a staff,” Fisher said. “We talked and we showed them what happened and how we had a chance to win (against the Chargers), having overcome so many different things in that game, still with a shot to win it. We didn’t win, and that’s disappointing, but hey, let’s move on.

“This team can put things behind them and keep things in perspective and stay focused. We practiced with a purpose, we met with a purpose. We’ve been doing that all year long. It all just came together for us today.”

And now, they will try to do it again in Washington, finding a way to get another win.

Middle linebacker James Laurinaitis called the Oakland win “a perfect storm” regarding the way the game developed, but he wouldn’t go so far as to call it a perfect game.

“I’m a perfectionist,” he said. “I can think of a lot of things we can do better. I still think we can be better tackling in the open field. But goodness, I’m not going to nitpick right now. I’m going to enjoy it for a solid 24 hours and then it’s on to the next one. We’ve got to learn in this locker room how to stack wins.”

Fisher said Monday, “We’re going to go out and try to win this game. We’ve got to go on the road again. We’re going to go out and do whatever it takes to try to win this game. If we’re fortunate enough to do that, I guess I can stand up with a smile on my face and say, we won two in a row.”
