St. Louis Rams backup running back Trey Watts has been suspended indefinitely for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, the league announced Wednesday.

Watts’ suspension without pay begins immediately.

In May, the league announced Watts’ first suspension for violation of the same rule. He missed the first four games of the season.

“I made a mistake and now I have to deal with it,” Watts, the son of former Oklahoma quarterback and U.S. Congressman J.C. Watts, said in August. “I’m disappointed in myself because I feel like I let people down. I let my teammates down and I let my family down.”

Watts, 24, also was a special teams player who played in 14 games as an undrafted rookie last season. He ran for 30 yards on seven carries and had three receptions for 18 yards. He made five tackles on special teams.

The Rams released Watts last month at the end of his suspension, signed him to the practice squad, then promoted him to the active roster on Oct. 23. He did not appear in a game this season.
