Questions of the absurd on Super Bowl Media Day

PHOENIX — From the scantily clad to super hero for a day, the duds were not the only curious choices at Super Bowl Media Day.

Journalistic integrity is not a prerequisite in the roaming mosh pit that is media day, held Tuesday on the floor level of the downtown U.S. Airways Center, home of the Phoenix Suns.

Child journalists, a disc jockey outfitted in a barrel supported by suspenders and Nickelodeon’s Pick Boy postured as media and the results were predictable.

Here are the most curious questions heard in the 90 minutes of player and coach availability:

–What is your favorite stuffed animal?

Posed to Bill Belichick, the notoriously gruff media snarl shark smiled and answered the questioner, a perfectly adorable first-grade (guessing) girl, that his choice is off the board — a monkey puppet.

–If there was a “handsome-off” between the Patriots and Seahawks and they sent Tom Brady, who would the Seahawks have as the challenger?

Asked of 6-foot-3, 240-pound Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor. He responded with a chuckle, tilted his head and said he did not know.

–What is your favorite Bon Jovi song?

Belichick smiled and responded “probably ‘Livin’ on a Prayer.'”

–One to 100, what is your favorite number?

Multiple players took this question. Most of them gave their jersey number.

–I think last year was the year of the booty. Which was your favorite booty: J-Lo, Iggy Azalea or Kim Kardashian?

This to Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, who gave the nod to J-Lo.

–Do you use beard oil?

This query of 40-year-old Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, whose dark, black beard might require de-forestization next week.

“We got some beard oil in the mail from a company, so (Ninkovich) dove right in to that. It’s got a nice lumberjack smell,” he said.

After the Buccaneers surprised everyone by taking a kicker with the 59th overall pick in the draft, G.M. Jason Licht explained the move by heaping superlatives on the player. “I was very excited along with my staff and coaches about Roberto for a very long time,” Licht told PFT Live in May 2016. “It’s not [more]
