NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Sometimes Tennessee Titans safety Bernard Pollard seems to rant just to rant.

Other times his impassioned remarks cut to the heart of what is wrong.

After Pollard was uncharacteristically quiet Sunday following the Titans’ 41-17 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, it was just a matter of time before he let loose. It happened in the locker room after practice Wednesday with the Titans preparing for the Cleveland Browns.

“I had nothing good to say, because I don’t want to bring any negative attention on anybody else,” Pollard said of his Sunday silence.

On Wednesday, he had a message for his teammates, and didn’t care who heard it, as he described the first four games for Tennessee as terrible.

Pollard had plenty more to say, challenging his teammates to step up and perform better to change a losing culture.

“We work, but it’s not translating over to the football field on Sunday,” he said. “We have to understand that we have to be better. It’s a must. I come from (a Baltimore Ravens) organization where the mentality, the culture is just totally different. Yeah, you might lose some games, but it’s a different culture. That needs to be changed here.”

So how is Pollard going about trying to change that culture?

“We have to have the right mentality, the right culture,” Pollard said. “The teams here in the last 10 years, I don’t want to say have accepted things, but we’ve got to come out and throw punches and we’ve got to fight. It doesn’t matter if you come out with a bloody lip. So what, you’ve got 10 other guys fighting with you. If we’re gonna go down, we’re gonna go down fighting.

“We have to be a better football team, because our fans deserve better. This city deserves better, and this organization deserves better.”

Pollard said he doesn’t care if teammates don’t like what he has to say about the Titans’ 1-3 start.

“I’m gonna try to (tick) some people off, and I couldn’t care less about what I’m saying,” he said. “We have talent. We have guys that can take the roof off and guys that can be stars in this league. It’s time for us to do that.

“The first quarter was … horrible. We sucked. … I say that again. We were horrible. But we have a shot at being a very good football team, and I’m gonna try and pull that out for all of us.”
