Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson said Monday he made the decision not to try to re-sign defensive end Greg Hardy, who signed with the Dallas Cowboys last week despite serious domestic violence allegations.

“Whose call would you think that would be?” Richardson told ESPN.com at the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix.

“We do the right things,” Richardson said when asked why he made that call.

Richardson had not commented regarding Hardy since the owner broke down in tears in September after being criticized for the organization’s stance against the 2013 Pro Bowl player as it pertained to his domestic violence case.

Hardy played only one game last season but received $13.1 million from Carolina. He was placed on the inactive roster in Week 2 and then put on the commissioner’s exempt list before Week 3.

On Wednesday, the Cowboys signed the free agent Hardy to a one-year deal after two days of negotiations.

Hardy, who had 15 sacks with the Panthers in 2013, remains on the commissioner’s exempt list and could face an NFL suspension of as many as six games for an alleged domestic assault last year.

The 26-year-old Hardy was arrested and charged with assaulting and threatening to kill his ex-girlfriend, Nicole Holder, in May. He was convicted last summer, but he appealed the ruling by the judge and a jury trial set for Feb. 9 in Charlotte, N.C., did not occur because Holder did not appear to testify after reportedly receiving a financial settlement from Hardy. The case was dismissed.
