New York Giants defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins has agreed to a pay cut of more than $1 million to return to the Giants in 2015, multiple media outlets reported Sunday.

Jenkins, 34, was limited to 12 games in 2014 because of a calf injury, and there were reports that his salary and age might lead to him being waived. But he agreed to have his salary reduced from $2.2 million to $1 million. The move reportedly saves $825,000 in cap space.

Jenkins has been a starter for the Giants the past two seasons when he’s healthy. He had five sacks in 16 games in 2013 but had just one sack in 2014.

He joined the Giants in 2013, signing a three-year, $8 million deal in guaranteed money.

–The Kansas City Chiefs and linebacker Justin Houston will try again this week to agree on a long-term deal, Pro Football Talk reported.

According to a source, the Chiefs and Houston’s agent, Joel Segal, will make another attempt early in the week at making progress on a new contract.

Without an agreement, the Chiefs are expected to apply the franchise tag to Houston, who racked up 22 sacks and 68 tackles in 2014.

–Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith expressed “shock” over the abrupt regime change in San Francisco, including the firing of 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Smith, who played for the 49ers for seven seasons, told the San Jose Mercury News that he doesn’t understand why Harbaugh and almost all of his coaching staff were sent packing after the 2014 season — despite the team going to three NFC championship games and a Super Bowl in Harbaugh’s four years.

“I think for me, it’s still just tough to believe all those guys are gone, all that turnover,” said Smith, who was participating at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am on Saturday. “I wasn’t there so obviously it’s hard for me to speculate on any of that. I was just kind of shocked. There were a lot of ballgames that got won over the last few years, but for whatever reason, they couldn’t make it work. I don’t know.”

–Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, who celebrated his 55th birthday on Saturday, feels blessed after a public battle with cancer last year.

“I’m blessed, a lot better off than a lot of other people, put it that way. I’m not here to complain, because I’m enjoying myself, that’s what you are supposed to do, have fun,” Kelly told the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.

Around this time last year, Kelly was preparing for a battery of chemotherapy and radiation treatments on his cancer that had returned and spread.

Kelly announced in September that he was cancer-free, but then he got a staph infection in his bones. He had to undergo an eight-week treatment for the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection.
