NFL roundup: 2015 draft might begin April 30

A one-year experiment of holding the draft the first full weekend in May is on hold, but the 2015 NFL Draft is indeed on the move.

According to ESPN, the 2015 draft will be held April 30-May 2, with the first round in prime time.

Moving the draft up one week from its 2014 start date avoids interference with the Mother’s Day holiday that caused consternation from the public and NFL teams alike. It also further compacted the offseason schedule, which was greatly reduced by the latest collective bargaining agreement.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in July that the 2015 draft will be in either Chicago or Los Angeles. New York’s Radio City Music Hall, the traditional site of the draft, was ruled out because of scheduling conflicts.

—Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was to sit out Thursday night’s game against the Green Bay Packers.

ESPN reported Bridgewater’s left ankle was not healthy enough for the team to consider risking his long-term health just four days after the rookie was carted to the locker room with a high ankle sprain. Coach Mike Zimmer indicated an MRI exam and X-rays showed no major damage to the ankle.

Replacing Bridgewater was former Vikings starter Christian Ponder, who would go from third string to the No. 1 quarterback in the span of three weeks. Ponder, 26, has 35 career starts with 38 touchdowns and 36 interceptions.

–Police confirmed that Dallas Cowboys safety C.J. Spillman is being investigated in connection with at alleged sexual assault in Grapevine, Texas, but the Cowboys said Thursday that Spillman’s roster status would not change unless he is charged or arrested.

“I think you have to be careful with just accusations and allegations in this situation,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. “When someone is officially charged or arrested for something, that’s when it becomes a different situation in our minds. For now, he’s a member of our football team and will take part in everything we do to this point.”

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league is looking into the situation involving Spillman.

Several media outlets reported that the alleged incident took place at the Gaylord Hotel in Grapevine on Sept. 20, the night before the Cowboys played the Rams in St. Louis. Spillman played in that game, making one tackle.

—The Chicago Bears have another potential problem on their offense line. Left tackle Jermon Bushrod has a knee injury suffered in practice that kept him from practicing Wednesday and Thursday.

Bushrod is day to day, according to head coach Marc Trestman. Bushrod hasn’t missed a start as a Bear or since 2009 when he was with the Saints.

—The NFL appointed former United States District Judge Barbara S. Jones to handle the appeal case filed by the NFL Players Association on Ray Rice’s behalf.

Commissioner Roger Goodell was required by the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement to consult with NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith before naming Jones to hear the appeal.

Rice was suspended by the league on Sept. 8 for violating the league’s personal conduct policy as it pertains to domestic violence.

—Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson offered a personal perspective on domestic violence in an article for a new players website, saying he was a bully who beat up other kids in his youth.

Writing for ThePlayersTribune.com, which was founded by recently retired New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, Wilson confessed, “Truthfully, I used to beat people up a lot. Many of you readers probably think I have been Mr. Goody Two-Shoes my whole life, but honestly, I was a bully growing up. In elementary and middle school, I threw kids against the wall. I rubbed their heads in the dirt at recess. I bit them. I even knocked teeth out.”

Wilson is trying to be proactive by starting the Why Not You Foundation to help worthy cause, including those focusing on domestic violence.

—The NFL Referees Association responded Thursday to criticism from the league that two recent calls made by officials on the field were incorrect.

The union called out the NFL for its inconsistencies in grading calls, saying the league has “caused confusion for NFL officials as to what the league does and doesn’t want called.”

The calls in question involved Kansas City Chiefs safety Husain Abdullah celebrating a interception return for a touchdown on Monday night and a hit by Washington’s Chris Baker on Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles on Sept. 21.

The union said both called were graded as correct, but the league later said publicly that the calls were not correct.
