Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel has been released from a rehab treatment facility after more than two months, according to multiple reports Saturday.

ESPN first reported that Manziel was out and the Cleveland Plain Dealer later confirmed the news.

The Browns had expected Manziel to be out of rehab in time to participate in the team’s workouts, which start April 20.

Manziel entered the treatment facility on Jan. 28 for an undisclosed problem. The Browns and others had become increasingly concerned about his partying and apparent denial.

Manziel will come back to a new challenger for Cleveland’s quarterback job — veteran Josh McCown signed with the Browns after one season in Tampa Bay, and 2014 starter Brian Hoyer left via free agency to join the Houston Texans — and again be the focus of questions and doubts about his ability to function in the NFL, on and off the field.

Manziel started two games and completed 18 of 35 passes for 175 yards and added nine rushes for 29 yards. He was placed on injured reserve after injuring his hamstring in Week 16 against the Carolina Panthers.

—The Miami Dolphins and Mike Pouncey agreed to a five-year contract extension that makes him the highest paid center in the NFL, according to multiple reports.

ESPN.om reported the deal is worth $52.15 million, including $22 million guaranteed and an $11 million signing bonus. The commitment keeps the Dolphins’ 2011 first-round pick in Miami through the 2019 season.

The average of more than $10 million per season surpasses the contract of Pittsburgh Steelers center and twin brother Maurkice Pouncey, who averages $8.8 million per season in his deal.

Mike Pouncey, who made his second consecutive Pro Bowl last season, is entering his fifth season with the Dolphins. He had been due to earn $7.4 million in 2015 in the final year of his contract.

—The Denver Broncos agreed to terms with free agent tight end James Casey on a one-year contract.

Casey is a seventh-year player who has appeared in 92 regular-season games (23 starts) and five playoff contests (one start) during his career with Houston (2009-12) and Philadelphia (2013-14).

The 30-year-old Casey owns 72 career receptions for 842 yards with six touchdowns on offense in addition to 50 tackles on special teams. In the postseason, he has totaled four receptions for 49 yards with one special-teams stop.

In 2014, Casey led the NFL with 439 snaps played on special teams while posting 13 tackles and two blocked punts for the Eagles.

—Emmitt Smith, the NFL’s all-time leader in rushing yards, doesn’t regret staying on the field instead of thinking about his health and the impact concussions can cause.

The 45-year-old Smith is a decade removed from his final season after playing 13 seasons for the Dallas Cowboys and two years with the Arizona Cardinals.

Smith was the speaker Thursday at the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health’s annual Family, Football & Fame luncheon in San Angelo, Texas.

“What we know today is about this much: We really don’t know how serious the problem is until 10 to 15 years (have passed),” Smith told the Standard-Times. “You can’t look at me today and say, ‘Well he’s doing fine.’ You cannot do that. That would be a big, big mistake.”

Smith gave an explanation why many players endure pain and injury playing in the NFL.

“You do it for the sake of the game. You do it for the sake of your teammates. You do it because it’s your team,” Smith said. “Should you be out there? The answer’s probably not. Would I do it again? Yes, I would. But that’s football. That’s the way I was raised. If you can’t play with pain, you can’t play the game.”

—Quarterback Jameis Winston, still expected to be the No. 1 selection by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the upcoming NFL draft, will make a visit to the New York Jets, according to the New York Daily News.

Winston isn’t expected to be available when the Jets are on the clock with the No. 6 pick.

The Daily News reported that the Jets canceled a private workout on April 4 with the former Florida State quarterback after seeing him at his Pro Day on March 31. According to the Daily News, Winston will have some classroom and film work to test his football acumen during his visit to Florham Park.

—The New York Jets will exercise the fifth-year option for 2016 on outside linebacker Quinton Coples, the Daily News reported.

Coples, the 16th overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft, will receive $7.8 million next year, but the option is only guaranteed for injury. In three seasons, the 24-year-old Coples has 105 tackles and 16.5 sacks.
