New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith had his jaw broken in two spots when he was on the wrong end of a punch in the locker room thrown by teammate IK Enemkpali, head coach Todd Bowles said Tuesday.

The Jets cut Enemkpali soon after the incident.

“It was something very childish,” Bowles said before Tuesday’s practice. “Something sixth graders could’ve talked about. I told them I wouldn’t say anything, I’m going to leave it there.”

According to NFL Network, Enemkpali leveled Smith when the quarterback put his finger in the 270-pounder’s face during a heated exchange about money Smith owed, prompting the punch. The blow resulted in multiple breaks in Smith’s jaw, which could make him a candidate for injured reserve with a return designation.

Smith will miss 6-10 weeks, Bowles said, “depending on the surgery they do and how he heals.”

Smith said “My only goal is to heal quickly and get back to playing with my teammates so I can be the best quarterback possible for the Jets.”

— The 2016 NFL Draft will be held April 28-30 in Chicago.

“We’re thrilled to be coming back,” commissioner Roger Goodell said at a special owners meeting at the Hyatt Schaumburg.

Chicago hosted the 2015 draft in April. Mayor Rahm Emanuel was on hand for a brief presentation and said a recent economic impact study revealed $81.6 million in impact.

The precise location isn’t known, but the NFL deemed the 2015 draft, a three-day affair that kicked off at Auditorium Theater and wrapped up at Grant Park, a smashing success. All options are being considered by the NFL in determining the venue for the 2016 first round.

— Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel was limited in practice.

Coach Mike Pettine said Manziel had a “little elbow soreness.” Pettine does not believe the injury is serious and expects Manziel to play in Thursday’s preseason opener against the Washington Redskins.

Manziel threw passes with his left hand, wearing a sleeve on his right, and did mostly handoffs in team drills. Connor Shaw took the majority of the second-team snaps behind Josh McCown, who was the first-team quarterback.

—The Pittsburgh Steelers signed veteran kicker Garrett Hartley to replace injured Shaun Suisham.

Hartley’s agent Erik Burkhardt confirmed that the former Saints and Browns kicker would take over for Suisham, who tore his ACL on a kickoff in Sunday’s preseason opening game against Minnesota.

In seven seasons, Hartley has connected on 81.7 percent of his field goal attempts. He most recently kicked for Cleveland last season where he went 3-for-3.

— Arizona Cardinals offensive tackle Bobby Massie is facing a three-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Massie plans to appeal the ban, according to the report.

The league suspended Massie because he was arrested for driving a vehicle while intoxicated at the Cardinals’ facility last January.

Massie started all 16 games for the Cardinals last season.

—The Arizona Cardinals re-signed safety Ross Weaver and released safety D.J. Campbell.

Weaver spent the last 11 weeks of the 2014 season on the Cardinals practice squad and remained with the team this offseason until being released on May 11.

— United States District Judge Richard M. Berman entered a motion requesting the NFL Players Union and NFL hold settlement talks in advance of Wednesday’s hearing in the long-running drama surrounding New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

“In anticipation of tomorrow’s conference, counsel and the parties are requested to engage in further good faith settlement efforts today. I will meet briefly with counsel and the parties tomorrow morning at 10:30 (in the robing room) for an update on your discussions,” Berman wrote in the filing on which the NFLPA on its own behalf and on behalf of Tom Brady is listed as the defendant.

The NFL Management Council is listed as the plaintiff.

Brady has been unwilling to admit guilt. If he’s steadfast in that approach, a settlement is unlikely.

— Head coach Bruce Arians, displeased with the performance of his running backs this season, could get his wish — a veteran running back to boost the Arizona Cardinals’ offense.

The Cardinals offered running back Chris Johnson a one-year contract, according to ESPN. However, it is not clear whether Johnson will accept the offer.

Johnson played for the New York Jets last season, and the former first-round pick spent the majority of his career with the Tennessee Titans. Johnson, 29, rushed for 663 last season, averaging 4.3 yards per carry. Johnson’s best year was 2009, when he led the NFL in rushing with 2,006 yards.

— The Chicago Bears acquired rookie linebacker Matthew Wells from the New England Patriots for backup guard Ryan Groy.

Wells, a sixth-round pick from Mississippi State, is undersized at 6-foot-2, 222, but is expected to play inside linebacker. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds at his pro day. His primary role if he makes the team would likely be special teams kick coverage.

Groy, undrafted out of Wisconsin, started three games for the Bears last season.

— Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Chris Whaley is out for the season with a torn Achilles tendon.

Whaley, who had recovered from a college injury — torn ACL at Texas — that spoiled his rookie season in 2014, is expected to land on injured reserve.

He was carted off the field Monday during practice in Oxnard, Calif.

— The Atlanta Falcons waived rookie safety Terell Floyd with an injury settlement. The 5-foot-10, 203-pounder signed with the team after going undrafted out of Louisville in the spring.

The versatile defensive back had been rated as the No. 77 cornerback in the 2015 class by NFLDraftScout.com.

Floyd’s career with the Falcons got off to a difficult start, as he was taken away by ambulance to a hospital after fainting during a practice on May 8. The injury that led Floyd being waived Tuesday was not disclosed, but he was considered a longshot to make the opening day roster.
