McCarthy says Rodgers ‘getting better’

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Just like last week, the timetable for Aaron Rodgers’ on-field participation in advance of the NFC Championship Game won’t be determined until Wednesday.

Coach Mike McCarthy provided an encouraging report Monday on how the Green Bay Packers’ star quarterback was holding up 24 hours after the team’s 26-21 comeback win over the Dallas Cowboys in a divisional playoff game Sunday.

At times noticeably gimpy, Rodgers held in for the entire game on his strained left calf. His big second-half performance, in which he threw for 226 of his 316 yards and two of his three touchdowns, rallied the Packers from a 21-13 deficit.

“Aaron made it through the game very well,” McCarthy said in his Monday news conference. “I saw him today. He’s getting better. I think he feels a lot better this time this week than he did last week.”

Rodgers didn’t practice much last week. He was held out Wednesday, then took part in just the team drills out of sight from the media Thursday before the Packers were off Friday and had a light workout Saturday.

McCarthy said Rodgers’ involvement this week leading up to the NFC title game at the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday won’t be known until Rodgers is evaluated Wednesday morning.

“Aaron will see the (team) doctor (Pat McKenzie) before the team meeting, and then there will be a medical staff meeting after that,” McCarthy said. “At that time, the plan will be set for Wednesday. That’s how we always do it.”

Saying the calf that greatly affected his mobility in Sunday’s game felt “a little bit worse” afterward than it did at the start of play, Rodgers suggested he would be on a modified practice schedule again this week.

Given the limitations and physical stress he was under, his performance against the Cowboys was nothing short of remarkable. Rodgers overcame some wild passes early and completed his last 10 passes of the contest in game-turning stretch that started with a 46-yard catch-and-run touchdown by rookie wide receiver Davante Adams late in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 21-20.

After throwing a 13-yard dart to rookie tight end Richard Rodgers between two defenders in the end zone for the go-ahead score with a nine-plus minutes to play, Aaron Rodgers hooked up with Adams and wide receiver Randall Cobb on two big third-down passes in what turned out to be the game-ending series as Green Bay ran out the clock.

“Just guts,” right guard T.J. Lang said of Rodgers’ resolve. “(He) just lit it up there in the second half.

“He turns it on, no matter if he’s hurt or not. He just plays lights out, and to have a guy who’s ailing a little bit go out there and put up the numbers, do the things that he did, especially with that last throw (to Cobb) to seal the game, is just a lot of fun to be a part of.”
