Jets hire Gailey as OC

Two years removed from his last job in football, Chan Gailey is the New York Jets’ new offensive coordinator.

Gailey, 63, becamesthe first assistant hired under the Jets’ new management team of head coach Todd Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan.

In his most recent NFL job, Gailey served as the Bills’ head coach from 2010-12. Buffalo finished in last place in the AFC East all three seasons, and Gailey was fired after compiling a 16-32 record.

Gailey also was the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in 1998 and 1999. Dallas went a combined 18-14 those years, losing a wild-card playoff game after each season.

Gailey also has experience as the offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos (1989-90), Pittsburgh Steelers (1996-97), Miami Dolphins (2000-01) and Kansas City Chiefs (2008).

He was the head coach at Georgia Tech from 2002-07, posting a 44-32 record, including a 2-4 mark in bowl games. He was in charge at Troy in 1983-84, guiding the Trojans to the Division II national title in his second season.

Gailey also spent 1993 as the head coach of Division I-AA Samford, posting a 5-6 record.

With the Jets, Gailey takes over an offense that finished 22nd in total yards this year (326.6 per game), 28th in scoring (17.7 points per game), third in rushing (142.5 yards per game) and last in passing (184.1 yards per game).

The Jets must decide if they will move forward with struggling quarterback Geno Smith or if they will seek a replacement.
