NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The New York Jets won and the Tennessee Titans improved their draft position.

Running back Chris Ivory’s 1-yard run with 3:09 left gave New York a come-from-behind 16-11 win Sunday at LP Field in a battle of 2-11 teams.

The Jets won for just the second time since Week 1, while Tennessee kept pace with Oakland, Jacksonville and Tampa Bay in the battle for the No. 1 overall pick in April’s NFL Draft.

Three Titans penalties helped keep New York’s winning drive going, including a personal foul on linebacker Wesley Woodyard after quarterback Geno Smith’s third-and-15 pass from the Jets’ 19 fell incomplete.

Running back Chris Johnson, who gained 7,965 yards in six seasons with Tennessee, rattled off a 37-yard gain to the Titans’ 4 to key the 11-play, 76-yard march.

Backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst, who relieved the injured Jake Locker (left shoulder) late in the first half, got Tennessee down to the New York 22 with two minutes left. But his fourth-and-17 pass from the 29 fell incomplete with 1:31 remaining.

The Titans nearly scored on the final play, executing three laterals from their 42 and reaching the Jets’ 9 before tight end Delanie Walker was bumped out of bounds.

Whitehurst completed 10 of 24 passes for 203 yards, while Locker was 6 of 11 for 57 yards.

Tennessee kicker Ryan Succop converted 40, 33 and 51-yard field goals — the last giving his team an 11-10 edge with 2:02 left in the third quarter — to account for most of the team’s offense

The Titans took a 5-3 lead to halftime after a first half which was rife with mental and physical errors.

Succop’s 40-yard field goal with 3:16 left in the first quarter gave the Titans their first lead since Nov. 17. Tennessee upped the margin to five points when Smith was called for intentional grounding in the end zone with 12:09 remaining in the half after a replay review overturned the original call of an incomplete pass.

Kicker Nick Folk put the Jets on the board with a 51-yard field goal with 2:08 left in the half. A running into the punter call on Titans linebacker Kaelin Burnett led to coach Rex Ryan’s decision to try the field goal.

Succop converted from 33 yards out with 6:03 left in the third quarter to make the lead 8-3, but New York grabbed its first lead when Smith hit fullback John Conner on a 9-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-1 with 4:34 remaining.

Smith completed 16 of 28 passes for 179 yards.

NOTES: Titans WR Kendall Wright (hand) sat out a second straight game. The Titans played with just three healthy WRs for the second consecutive game. … Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson (turf toe) was inactive for the game and was replaced by Quinton Coples. … Titans OLB Kamerion Wimbley (hamstring) was also inactive.
