Jacksonville Jaguars fourth-round safety James Sample underwent surgery Friday for a broken right arm.

Sample was injured during Thursday’s organized team activity workout.

The 6-foot-2, 191-pound Sample, selected out of Louisville, is expected to return at some point during training camp and be ready for the regular season.

Sample led Louisville with 90 tackles last season, adding four interceptions and eight pass breakups. He played at Washington in 2011 and 2012 and then transferred to American River College in California but didn’t play there. He transferred to Louisville before the 2014 season.

Sample played strong safety at Louisville, but the Jaguars are moving him to free safety.

General manager Dave Caldwell told the Florida Times-Union that the injury happened halfway through the final period of practice.

“Half-speed banging of arms … if that,” Caldwell said. “It was pretty benign. Just one of those things. It wasn’t even a collision. Accidental.”

Sample likely will start training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

“Barring any setbacks, he should be able to practice at some point during camp,” Caldwell said. “He should be ready for the regular season.”

Sample is the second Jaguars’ draft pick to suffer a major injury.

First-rounder Dante Fowler Jr.’s rookie season lasted less than an hour when he tore his left ACL on the first day of minicamp last month. The No. 3 overall pick will miss the entire 2015 season.
