NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFL executive vice president Troy Vincent spent part of Sunday meeting with Texas coach Charlie Strong to learn more about the core values that Strong uses to operate the Longhorns program.

“We discussed setting standards, and taking a stand on who we are as football leaders,” Vincent said. “Charlie Strong is doing that. It is a difficult process changing culture, not for the light-hearted. But, as we know at the NFL, it is a process that must be endured with the goals of high standards, excellence and accountability.”

Strong, the former head coach at Louisville, has instituted five “Core Values” that his players must follow: be honest, treat women with respect, no drugs, no stealing and no weapons.

The first-year Texas has come under scrutiny recently for a spate of disciplinary action that he has taken, including dismissing nine players from the team.

The NFL has had its own well-documented problems in recent months. Goodell has been criticized because of the way he handled the Ray Rice incident, and the commissioner has admitted to mishandling the Rice Case.

Other abuse allegations involving Vikings running back Adrian Peterson and Panthers lineman J.J. Hardy have the league searching for ways to help educate players and prevent future violent incidents.

League officials hope by creating a better football culture at the collegiate level, they might be able to reduce future problems, the Dallas Morning News reported.

Goodell met with almost a dozen former players last week and came away with an urgent recommendation that the league needs to act swiftly when dealing with those accused of domestic violence.

On Sunday, Vincent also indicated that the discussion with Strong might be the first of many meetings between NFL officials and college coaches as they attempt to develop a stronger relationship with colleges and universities.
