The New York Giants’ athletic trainer has departed South Florida without getting a chance to see injured defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, according to reports Wednesday.

Giants officials, including vice president of medical services Ronnie Barnes, had arrived in Miami on Monday hoping to visit the 26-year-old Pierre-Paul, who is at Jackson Memorial Hospital after injuring his hands in a Fourth of July fireworks accident.

Pierre-Paul suffered injuries to both hands, including severe burns and possible nerve damage, according to reports Sunday. Pierre-Paul reportedly underwent surgery.

It was not known whether Pierre-Paul’s injuries will impact him on the field or his arrival at training camp when the team reports July 30.

According to ESPN, the Giants did not ask Pierre-Paul whether they could visit him in the hospital. Team officials flew down to check on him and try to determine how extensive his injuries were, but the officials were not welcomed once they arrived.

A spokeswoman at the hospital told the New York Daily News that the family has asked for privacy.

Police in Coral Springs, Fla., are no longer investigating Pierre-Paul after determining the incident did not take place in their jurisdiction, but he still could face legal trouble from another jurisdiction in Florida, where fireworks other than those in the sparklers category are illegal without a permit.

Neighbors said Pierre-Paul rented a U-Haul van that was full of fireworks for a Fourth of July celebration Saturday and made his plans for a major display known to those in his neighborhood.

Pierre-Paul is technically not under contract with the team as he has not signed his $14.8 million franchise tender. The deadline for franchised players to agree to long-term contracts is July 15. If a deal can’t be reached by that date, Pierre-Paul would have to play under his tender, unless the Giants decide to withdraw it.

The Giants reportedly pulled a long-term offer worth at least $60 million on Monday. The initial report of the contract being off the table claimed concerns over Pierre-Paul’s judgment and health.

Pierre-Paul did not attend the Giants’ offseason workouts as he sought to avoid injury and retain leverage in talks toward a long-term contract. Any injury could jeopardize those negotiations.

There is concern that Pierre-Paul’s hand injury could force him to miss training camp and the start of the season, one team source told ESPN on Monday.

The 15th overall pick in the 2010 draft, Pierre-Paul has 42 sacks in 75 games.

Pierre-Paul was slowed by injuries in 2012 and 2013 and came on strong in the second half of the 2014 season, albeit against average competition, with 12.5 sacks and nine in the final five games.
