Giants GM on JPP: ‘We’re talking’

INDIANAPOLIS – Head coach Tom Coughlin said the New York Giants want Jason Pierre-Paul to retire with the team. General manager Jerry Reese is not quite as willing to show his cards.

The Giants and the talented defensive end, eligible for unrestricted free agency March 10, are in negotiations. How advanced those talks are, Reese will not say.

“We’re talking, but that’s all I’m going to say about that,” Reese said at the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine.

Reese was at the podium Saturday morning during the start of on-field quarterback workouts. He said that would not preclude the Giants from looking at a quarterback with the ninth overall pick.

He described the Giants as getting healthy and moving in the right direction toward the salary cap. That might open the door to using the franchise tag is negotiations are not completed with Pierre-Paul.

“We’re going to keep our options open with respect to that,” Reese said.

Reese said the Giants aren’t changing much in prospect evaluations based on changes to the NFL personal conduct policy. In the team’s history, Reese said they’ve “taken chances” but do know from experience that players with a full “police blotter” don’t often change their ways.

Prospects are prepped not only on performance on the field, but they’ve run through many exercises and mock interviews to be programmed to say the right things.

“They’re well-versed on what they want to say, but we have some crafty questions to get the answers,” Reese said.

The Giants are hoping that with the ninth overall pick a great player is on the board. They landed Offensive Rookie of the Year Odell Beckham Jr. with the 12th selection in 2014. Beckham led the Giants with 91 receptions for 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns.

“We thought he was a good player, we thought he was a terrific players,” Reese said, even though the Giants were not well-informed on Beckham’s full profile at this point a year ago. “We had our pre-draft meetings and there’s a lot of holes until you do the Combine and pro days, interviews. We talked about him a little bit. He was fast and he caught the ball nice. We call it arrogant hands. He had that. That caught our attention.”

Reese said the Giants will try to upgrade at receiver and is wary of “putting all the eggs in the basket” of Victor Cruz, who is recovering from a knee injury. If there is a great receiver available at No. 9, would Reese take a look?

“We’ll take the best player available – the best player,” Reese said.
