Former San Francisco 49ers director of player of personnel Tom Gamble was named a senior personnel executive by the team on Thursday.

Gamble returns to the 49ers after two years with the Philadelphia Eagles as vice president of player personnel before a parting of the ways. He previously was with the 49ers for eight years, including the last two in 2011-12 as director of palyer personnel.

“Tom is one of the most experienced, knowledgeable and respected personnel men in the business,” 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said. “He played an instrumental role in our personnel department from 2005-2012, and is well versed in our system having played a role in its development.

“This familiarity, along with his many strengths, will be tremendous assets as we prepare for free agency and the draft. It is great to have Tom back with the 49ers.”

In his first stint with the 49ers, Gamble was in charge of college and pro personnel efforts. He served as director of pro personnel from 2005 to 2010.

Before coming to San Francisco, Gamble was a college scout for the Indianapolis Colts from 1998 through the 2005 draft under longtime NFL executive Bill Polian. His NFL career began with the Eagles in 1988 as an assistant in the player personnel department.

Gamble also has worked as an defensive assistant/quality control coach for the New York Jets, a part-time college scout for the Carolina Panthers and a pro scout for the Baltimore Ravens.
