Rob Konrad, a former Miami Dolphins player, survived a fall from his boat and incredibly swam nine miles in the Atlantic Ocean before reaching land in Palm Beach.

The U.S. Coast Guard said Konrad, a fullback for the Dolphins from 1999 to 2004, was on a fishing excursion from Boca Raton to Lake Worth on Wednesday night when he fell overboard from a 36-foot boat.

The Coast Guard said Konrad was fishing alone and his boat was on autopilot and drifted off and away from him after he fell. Petty Officer Mark Barney of the Coast Guard told ABC News that Konrad was in the water for 10 to 12 hours.

Konrad’s fishing trip began at about 10 a.m. ET Wednesday. When he failed to return later that day, his friends contacted the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard said a helicopter crew was dispatched and spent about two hours attempting to locate him.

Konrad, 38, was found on the beach by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office at 4:40 a.m. on Thursday morning after he contacted them. Konrad was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for possible hypothermia and released. He reportedly declined to speak to local media about the event.

ABC News reported Konrad was listed on a website for investment firm KT Capital as a principal.

Konrad, who also played four years at Syracuse, started 57 games and played in 82 for the Dolphins, catching 111 passes for 854 yards and six touchdowns and rushing for another 114 yards and a score. He was released by Miami in March 2005.
