The Indianapolis Colts promoted safety Dewey McDonald to the active roster from the practice squad, waived inside linebacker Amarlo Herrera and cornerback Shaun Prater and released quarterback Alex Tanney from the practice squad on Tuesday.

McDonald joined the Colts’ practice squad last month after playing in 12 games as a rookie in 2014. His 13 special-teams tackles last year ranked second on the team. In three preseason games this year, he had three special-teams tackles.

Herrera started the season on the Colts’ practice squad but was activated on Oct. 17. He was the team’s sixth-round draft pick in 2015 out of Georgia.

Prater came to the Colts as a free agent earlier this month and played in the Colts’ win over the Houston Texans during Week 5. The NFL veteran has played in 20 career games and started three. He has totaled six tackles, seven passes defensed, one interception and five special-teams tackles for the Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles.

Tanney was signed to the Colts’ practice squad on Sept. 29 after bouncing around the league with the Bills, Titans, Browns, Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs since 2012.
