The Chargers are staying in San Diego … for at least one more year.

The team announced Tuesday that it will play in Qualcomm Stadium in 2015. The decision takes the Chargers out of the mix for a potential relocation to Los Angeles next year.

Mark Fabiani, special counsel to Chargers president Dean Spanos, said in a prepared statement: “On February 1st of every year since 2007, the Chargers have been eligible to terminate the team’s lease for Qualcomm Stadium. And each year since 2007, the Chargers have announced that the team will not exercise the termination clause and instead continue to work toward a permanent stadium solution in San Diego.

“The team will not be exercising the lease termination clause and will keep working to find a publicly acceptable way to build a Super Bowl-quality stadium in San Diego. Calendar year 2015 will constitute the team’s 14th year of work on a San Diego stadium solution.”

According to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, the St. Louis Rams and Oakland Raiders, both on year-to-year leases, remain interested in moving to Los Angeles next year. Both the Rams and Raiders are former L.A. residents.

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said keeping the Chargers is a priority.

“We have to get this done,” Faulconer said on radio station The Mighty 1090, according to ESPN.com. “It’s too important to us as a city. And it’s not just the city, it’s in fact the entire San Diego region. The Chargers are extremely important to San Diego. The Chargers belong in San Diego.

“We have a facility that is outdated, and that’s just the facts. I’ve been on the job for eight months now, and I’ve said we have to call the question. We have to get this done. And we have to bring everybody to the table to solve this once and for all. And I’m committed to doing that.”
