The San Diego Chargers and defensive tackle Corey Liuget agreed to a contract extension on Tuesday.

The team did not state terms of the deal, but previous reports indicated it was expected to be worth around $50 million over five years.

The Chargers’ first-round draft pick in 2011, Liuget has recorded 202 tackles, 49 tackles for loss, 18 sacks and four forced fumbles in his first four seasons.

In 2014, Liuget led the defensive line with 65 tackles and the team with 4.5 sacks, 19 tackles for loss and 18 quarterback pressures. He also scored the first touchdown of his career, on a fumble recovery in San Francisco in December.

“Corey is a consummate team player who goes about his work in an unselfish manner,” general manager Tom Telesco said in a written release from the team. “His preparation and dedication to the game and the Chargers has been evident since Day 1. Corey is talented, tough and durable, and plays a very important role in our defense. This extension is another reflection of our commitment to investing in our core players and homegrown talent.”

Coach Mike McCoy said, “Corey is hard work personified. He will do whatever it takes to get better and help the team. And he’s still improving. There’s no limit to how good he can be. He has a lot of great football ahead.”

Liuget thanked the Spanos family, which owns the team, as well as Telesco and his coaches.

“This is a dream come true,” he said. “The Chargers are the only team I’ve ever wanted to play for since they drafted me and my No. 1 goal now, as it has always been, is just to continue to prepare and play at a high level to show them how much I appreciate their confidence in me.”
