LANDOVER, Md. – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had lost five straight games and were just 1-8. However, the host Washington Redskins had no answer for Mike Evans.

The Buccaneers’ rookie receiver caught seven passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns as Tampa Bay cruised to a 27-7 rout of the 3-7 Redskins on Sunday.

Evans, the seventh overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft, beat safety Ryan Clark and cornerback Bashaud Breeland for a 36-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Josh McCown with 4:36 left in the third quarter.

Just 5:29 later, inside linebacker Perry Riley was left in single coverage on Evans, who easily beat him for a 56-yard bomb from McCown (15-of-23, 288 yards) to make it 27-7.

Evans joined former receiver Antonio Bryant as the only Bucs with three straight 100-yard games with a touchdown.

The game got off to bad start for Washington. Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III’s first pass bounded off the hands of tight end Niles Paul and into those of Tampa linebacker Danny Lansanah at the Washington 29-yard line. Seven plays later, Patrick Murray’s 32-yard field goal gave the Bucs a 3-0 lead.

The Redskins’ second series ended in more painful fashion as two-time Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams injured his right knee when Bucs defensive tackle Gerald McCoy was blocked into him from behind.

Washington’s third possession was also catastrophic. Griffin’s third-down pass intended for receiver Pierre Garcon was tipped by linebacker Mason Foster into the hands of cornerback Johnthan Banks, who returned it 19 yards for a touchdown. The Bucs had 52 yards of offense but led 10-0.

Tampa Bay added to the bungling when the Bucs’ Marcus Thigpen muffed Tress Way’s punt and Washington’s Darrel Young recovered at the Bucs’ 17. However, the Redskins committed penalties for an illegal block and an illegal formation before consecutive sacks forced Kai Forbath into a 47-yard field attempt, which he sent wide right to end his streak of 11 consecutive successes.

On a subsequent second-and-20 play, Evans burned little-used cornerback Tracy Porter for a 51-yard catch that set up Murray’s 38-yarder and extended the margin to 13-0 with 7:39 remaining in the half.

Redskins third-down back Roy Helu’s first touch of the day was a 13-yard scamper with a screen, but defensive end Jacquies Smith knocked the ball loose and the Bucs took over at their 37.

Washington finally scored with 11 seconds left in the half when Helu raced 30 yards with a screen to make it 13-7.

The Redskins reached the Tampa Bay 26 midway through the third quarter, but Griffin was sacked on third down — one of six by a Bucs defense that came in with just 14 — and Forbath was wide right again from 50.
